The Caves & Cliffs Update — Minecraft Walkthrough

Journey through Minecraft's Caves & Cliffs Update, exploring vast new cave systems and towering mountains introduced in versions 1.17 and 1.18.

The Caves & Cliffs Update: A World Transformed

The Caves & Cliffs Update, released in two parts (1.17 and 1.18), was a monumental overhaul of Minecraft's world generation, introducing vast new cave systems, towering mountains, and a wealth of new blocks, mobs, and items. This update fundamentally changed how players explore and interact with the underground and mountainous regions of the Overworld, adding immense depth and verticality to the game.

Prior to the Caves & Cliffs Update, caves were often simple, winding tunnels, and mountains were relatively flat. Part 1 of the update focused on adding new mobs, blocks, and items that could be found in existing cave and mountain biomes, such as Axolotls, Glow Squids, Copper, and Amethyst Geodes. Part 2, released as version 1.18, completely revamped the world generation itself, dramatically increasing the height and depth of the Overworld. This meant larger, more complex cave systems like Lush Caves and Dripstone Caves, and sificantly taller mountains with new biomes like the Jagged Peaks and Snowy Slopes. This update truly brought the 'cliffs' and 'caves' to life, offering an unparalleled sense of discovery.

Key Additions in Part 1 (1.17)

The initial release of the Caves & Cliffs Update laid the groundwork for the massive changes to come, introducing many new elements that enriched existing biomes:

  • New Mobs:
    • Axolotls: Amphibious creatures found in underground water sources. They can help players in combat by attacking aquatic mobs.
    • Glow Squids: Found in dark underwater areas, they drop Glow Ink Sacs when killed, which can be used to craft glowing text on ss and to craft the Glow Item Frame.
    • Goats: Found in mountain biomes, they can ram players and other mobs, and drop goat horns.
  • New Blocks:
    • Copper: Used for crafting Lightning Rods, Spyglasses, and various decorative blocks that oxidize over time.
    • Amethyst Geodes: Naturally occurring structures containing Amethyst blocks and budding Amethyst, which grow Amethyst Shards.
    • Dripstone: Found in Dripstone Caves, used for decorative purposes and can form stalactites and stalagmites.
    • Deepslate: A harder, more durable variant of stone found at lower Y-levels.
  • New Items:
    • Spyglass: Allows players to zoom in on distant objects.
    • Lightning Rod: Attracts lightning strikes, useful for iting TNT or charging Creepers.
    • Tinted Glass: A variant of glass that blocks light.

Key Additions in Part 2 (1.18) - The World Height Update

This part of the update was the most transformative, fundamentally altering the Overworld's generation:

  • Increased World Height and Depth: The buildable height limit was increased to Y=320, and the world now generates down to Y=-64. This created much larger and more varied terrain.
  • New Cave Biomes:
    • Lush Caves: Vibrant, underground biomes filled with unique flora like dripleaf, moss, and spore blossoms. They are often found beneath Azalea trees.
    • Dripstone Caves: Characterized by large formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and abundant dripstone blocks.
    • Cheese Caves: Large, open cave systems with horizontal tunnels.
    • Spaghetti Caves: Long, winding, and narrow cave systems.
    • Noodle Caves: Similar to Spaghetti Caves but even more elongated.
  • New Mountain Biomes:
    • Jagged Peaks: Tall, sharp mountain peaks with a mix of stone and snow.
    • Frozen Peaks: Covered in snow and ice.
    • Stony Peaks: Rocky mountain peaks without snow.
    • Meadow: A gentler biome found at the base of mountains, with flowers and grass.
    • Grove: A forest biome found on mountain slopes, with spruce trees.
    • Snowy Slopes: Sloping areas covered in snow.
  • Ore Distribution Changes: The distribution of ores was adjusted to better suit the new world height, with diamonds becoming more common at lower levels and iron and coal appearing more frequently at higher altitudes.

Impact on Gameplay

The Caves & Cliffs Update sificantly enhanced the exploration experience. Players now have more reasons to delve deep into the earth, discovering new cave systems and rare resources. The increased mountain heights offer new challenges and opportunities for building and adventuring. The update encourages a more vertical playstyle, making both mining and mountaineering more engaging and rewarding.
