End Biomes and Resources

After defeating the Ender Dragon in Minecraft, access Outer End Islands to find new biomes and valuable resources like chorus fruit and end rods.

End Biomes and Resources

The End dimension, initially a desolate battleground for the Ender Dragon, transforms significantly after its defeat. Once the dragon is vanquished, an End Gateway Portal appears, leading to the outer End islands. These islands are a treasure trove of unique biomes and invaluable resources, crucial for advanced gameplay and item acquisition.

Accessing the Outer End Islands

After defeating the Ender Dragon, a small, bedrock-framed End Gateway Portal will spawn near the edge of the main End island. To activate it, throw an Ender Pearl into the portal. You will be instantly teleported to a random location on the outer End islands. Be prepared for a potentially long journey back if you don't establish a return method.

  • Preparation is Key: Before venturing into the outer End, ensure you have:
    • A good supply of Ender Pearls for travel and navigating gaps.
    • A Water Bucket to negate fall damage (place water just before hitting the ground).
    • Plenty of food, armor, and weapons.
    • A Pickaxe (preferably Diamond or Netherite) for mining End Stone and Purpur Blocks.
    • A Shovel for End Stone.
    • Blocks for bridging (e.g., Cobblestone, Dirt).
    • A Boat or Elytra (if already obtained) for efficient travel between islands.
    • A Shulker Box or two to store your valuable finds.
  • Return Strategy: Consider bringing materials to build a temporary shelter and a Bed to set your spawn point, though sleeping in the End will cause an explosion. The safest way to return to the Overworld is to die (losing your items unless you have a Keep Inventory game rule active) or to build a new End Portal frame using End Portal Frames and Eyes of Ender, which is extremely resource-intensive. The most practical method is to locate another End Gateway Portal on the outer islands or build a bridge back to the main island.

Outer End Biomes

The outer End islands are primarily composed of a single biome, simply called "The End." However, within this biome, you'll encounter distinct structures and features:

  • End Islands: These are floating landmasses made predominantly of End Stone. They vary greatly in size and elevation, often separated by vast empty spaces.
  • Chorus Forests: These unique "trees" grow abundantly on the outer islands. They consist of Chorus Plant blocks, which can be harvested to yield Chorus Fruit. When a Chorus Plant is broken, all connected blocks above it will also break. Breaking the base of a Chorus Plant will yield all its fruit.
    • Harvesting Chorus Fruit: Eating Chorus Fruit instantly teleports You to a nearby random location, similar to an Ender Pearl but without damage. This can be incredibly useful for traversing gaps or escaping sticky situations.
    • Crafting Popped Chorus Fruit: Smelting Chorus Fruit in a furnace yields Popped Chorus Fruit, a key ingredient for crafting Purpur Blocks and End Rods.
  • End Cities: These are towering, labyrinthine structures made of Purpur Blocks, End Stone Bricks, and End Rods. They are the primary source of valuable loot and the elusive Elytra.
    • Shulkers: End Cities are guarded by Shulkers, hostile mobs that blend in with the Purpur Blocks. They shoot homing projectiles that inflict a Levitation effect, making combat challenging. Defeating Shulkers has a chance to drop Shulker Shells, essential for crafting Shulker Boxes.
    • Loot Chests: End Cities contain numerous loot chests filled with rare items such as enchanted diamond armor and tools, Elytra, Dragon's Breath, and various other valuable resources.
    • End Ships: Some End Cities generate with an attached End Ship, a flying vessel that often contains the most coveted treasure: the Elytra, usually found in an item frame in the ship's main cabin, guarded by a Shulker. The ship also contains a Dragon Head on its bow.

Key Resources and Their Uses

  • End Stone: The most common block in the End. It has a high blast resistance, making it useful for construction. It can be smelted into End Stone Bricks for decorative purposes.
  • Chorus Plant / Chorus Fruit: As detailed above, Chorus Fruit provides teleportation, and Popped Chorus Fruit is used for crafting.
  • Purpur Blocks: Decorative blocks found exclusively in End Cities. Crafted from Popped Chorus Fruit. Varieties include Purpur Block, Purpur Pillar, Purpur Stairs, and Purpur Slabs.
  • End Rods: Decorative light sources found in End Cities. Crafted from Blaze Rods and Popped Chorus Fruit.
  • Shulker Shells: Dropped by Shulkers. Two Shulker Shells and one Chest craft a Shulker Box, an invaluable portable storage solution that retains its contents when broken.
  • Elytra: The ultimate prize of the End. Found in End Ships, these allow players to glide through the air, revolutionizing travel. They can be repaired with Phantom Membranes or on an Anvil.
  • Dragon Head: A rare decorative block found on the bow of End Ships.
