The Beginning — Minecraft Walkthrough

Master the start of Minecraft. Learn to gather wood, craft tools, find shelter, and survive your first night with this essential walkthrough.

The Beginning — Minecraft Walkthrough

The first moments in a new Minecraft world are critical. Spawning into an unknown landscape with nothing but your bare hands, your immediate goal is survival. This initial phase sets the tone for your entire playthrough, emphasizing resourcefulness, quick decision-making, and a fundamental understanding of the game's core mechanics.

Your primary objectives in these first few minutes are to gather essential resources, craft basic tools, and secure a safe place to survive the first night. The world is full of potential dangers, from falling into ravines to the emergence of hostile mobs as darkness falls. Mastering these initial steps will ensure you have a solid foundation for all your future adventures.

Step 1: Gathering Wood

As soon as you spawn, locate the nearest trees. Your first task is to punch them to break the wood blocks. You'll need at least 5-10 logs to get started.

  1. Punch Trees: Hold down the left mouse button while aiming at a wood block.
  2. Collect Logs: The broken wood blocks will drop as items. Pick them up.
  3. Craft Planks: Open your inventory (press 'E'). Place the logs into the 2x2 crafting grid. Each log will produce 4 wooden planks. You'll need at least 16 planks.

Step 2: Crafting Essential Items

With your wooden planks, you can now craft the tools that will allow you to gather more advanced materials.

  1. Crafting Table: Place 4 wooden planks in your 2x2 inventory crafting grid to create a crafting table. Place this table in the world (right-click).
  2. Sticks: Open the crafting table. Place two wooden planks vertically in the 3x3 grid to create sticks. You'll need at least 4 sticks.
  3. Wooden Pickaxe: In the crafting table, place 3 wooden planks across the top row and 2 sticks vertically in the middle column below them. This is your first tool.
  4. Wooden Axe (Optional but Recommended): Place 3 wooden planks in an 'L' shape and 2 sticks below them. This helps gather wood faster.

Step 3: Gathering Stone and Upgrading Tools

Now that you have a pickaxe, you can mine stone. Stone tools are sificantly more durable and efficient than wooden ones.

  1. Find Stone: Look for grey stone blocks on the surface, in hillsides, or shallow caves.
  2. Mine Stone: Use your wooden pickaxe to mine at least 8 stone blocks.
  3. Craft a Stone Pickaxe: In the crafting table, place 3 stone blocks across the top row and 2 sticks vertically below them.
  4. Craft a Stone Axe: Similar to the wooden axe, but using stone.
  5. Craft a Furnace: Place 8 cobblestone (mined stone) in a circle in the crafting table, leaving the center empty.

Step 4: Preparing for Nightfall

As the sun begins to set, hostile mobs will start to spawn. You need shelter and light.

  • Find or Dig a Shelter: A simple hole dug into the side of a hill or a small dirt hut will suffice. Ensure it has a roof and a door.
  • Craft a Door: Use 6 wooden planks in a 2x3 vertical arrangement in the crafting table.
  • Craft Torches: If you found coal while mining stone, combine it with sticks in your inventory or crafting table. If not, you can create charcoal by smelting wood logs in your furnace using planks as fuel.
  • Light Your Shelter: Place torches inside your shelter to prevent mobs from spawning within it.

Step 5: Food and Fuel

You'll need food to replenish your hunger bar and fuel for your furnace.

  • Gather Food: Look for passive mobs like pigs, cows, or sheep. Kill them to get raw meat and wool (for a bed, which skips night).
  • Cook Food: Place raw meat in the top slot of the furnace and coal or planks in the bottom slot. Cooked food restores more hunger.
  • Fuel the Furnace: Wood logs, planks, coal, and charcoal can all be used as fuel.
