Enchanting System — Minecraft Guide

The enchanting system in Minecraft allows you to imbue your tools, weapons, and armor with magical properties, vastly improving their effectiveness and utility. Mastering enchantments is a key step towards conquering the game's most challenging aspects and optimizing your gameplay experience. This guide will walk you through the process.

To begin enchanting, you'll need an Enchanting Table. This is crafted using four Obsidian blocks, two Diamonds, and one Book. Obsidian can be obtained by pouring water onto lava sources. Once you have your Enchanting Table, place it down. For the table to function at its full potential, it needs to be surrounded by Bookshelves. Each bookshelf placed adjacent to the Enchanting Table (with a one-block air gap) increases the maximum enchantment level you can achieve. You'll need 15 bookshelves to reach the highest enchantment level of 30.

When you interact with the Enchanting Table, you'll see three slots for items and three enchantment options. To enchant an item, place it in the first slot. You will then see three potential enchantments listed, along with a numerical cost in Experience Levels. These experience levels are gained by defeating mobs, mining, smelting, and completing other in-game activities. The enchantments displayed are randomized, and their availability and strength depend on the number of bookshelves surrounding the table.

The three enchantment options presented are not always the enchantments you'll receive. Clicking on an enchantment will consume the experience levels and the item, and then apply one of the listed enchantments. The specific enchantment applied is still somewhat random, but it will be one of the three shown. If you don't like the options, you can click on one of the enchantments to 'waste' the experience and refresh the available enchantments on the next attempt. This is a common strategy to try and get specific enchantments.

Lapis Lazuli is also required for enchanting. This blue ore is found underground and is used to 'power' the enchantment, essentially acting as a reagent. The number of Lapis Lazuli required also varies based on the enchantment level. You'll need to have Lapis Lazuli in your inventory to perform an enchantment.

Enchantment Tables and Bookshelf Setup

  1. Craft an Enchanting Table (4 Obsidian, 2 Diamonds, 1 Book).
  2. Place the Enchanting Table.
  3. Surround the Enchanting Table with Bookshelves. A 5x5 square with the table in the center, leaving a one-block air gap between the table and the bookshelves, is ideal.
  4. Ensure you have Lapis Lazuli and Experience Levels.
  5. Place your item in the Enchanting Table interface.
  6. Select an enchantment option and confirm.

Anvil for Combining and Repairing

While the Enchanting Table is for applying new enchantments, the Anvil is crucial for combining enchantments from multiple items, repairing enchanted gear, and applying enchantments from Enchanted Books. Enchanted Books can be found in loot chests, traded from Librarian villagers, or obtained through fishing. To use an Enchanted Book, place the item you want to enchant in the first slot of the Anvil interface, and the Enchanted Book in the second. This will combine the enchantments, but it will also cost experience levels. Be mindful of the 'curse of binding' and 'curse of vanishing' enchantments, which can be detrimental.
