Mutant Bestiary

The irradiated wastes of Miscreated are teeming with dangers, and none are more immediate or terrifying than the mutated creatures that roam the land. Understanding their behaviors, weaknesses, and preferred habitats is crucial for survival. This bestiary provides detailed strategies for encountering and dispatching the most common mutant threats.

The Common Infected (Runners)

These are your bread-and-butter enemies, found almost everywhere. They are fast, aggressive, and often travel in small packs. While individually weak, a group can quickly overwhelm an unprepared player.

  • Locations: Ubiquitous, especially prevalent in urban ruins, abandoned towns (e.g., Pinecrest, Sperryville), and near crashed vehicles.
  • Strategy:
    • Melee: A well-aimed swing with a Hatchet, Crowbar, or even a Pipe Wrench can often one-shot a Runner to the head. Aim for headshots to conserve durability.
    • Firearms: Any firearm will do, but conserve precious ammunition. A 9mm Pistol with a few headshots is efficient. For groups, a shotgun like the Double Barrel Shotgun or Pump Action Shotgun is excellent for crowd control at close range.
    • Evasion: If outnumbered or low on resources, sprinting away is often the best option. They will typically lose interest after a short chase unless you are cornered.
    • Loot: Occasionally drop low-tier food items (e.g., Canned Beans), dirty water, or very rarely, a small amount of scrap metal.

The Brute (Heavy Infected)

Larger, slower, and significantly tougher than Runners, Brutes are formidable foes. Their powerful melee attacks can inflict serious damage, and they can take a lot of punishment before going down.

  • Locations: Often found guarding high-tier loot areas such as military bases (e.g., Sultan, Fort Rock), bunkers, and larger industrial complexes. They can also appear in larger towns.
  • Strategy:
    • Maintain Distance: Their primary threat is their close-range slam attack. Keep your distance and kite them.
    • Headshots are Key: While tough, headshots are still their weakest point. Use a high-damage rifle like an AK-47, M16, or SVD. A few well-placed shots to the head will bring them down much faster than body shots.
    • Explosives: If you have them, Frag Grenades or Molotov Cocktails can soften them up considerably, especially if you can land a direct hit.
    • Teamwork: When playing with a squad, have one player draw its attention while others flank and focus fire on its head.
    • Loot: Brutes have a higher chance of dropping better loot, including ammunition (e.g., 5.56x45mm, 7.62x39mm), weapon attachments, and sometimes even medical supplies (e.g., Bandages, Painkillers).

The Crawler (Spitter)

These grotesque mutants are characterized by their hunched posture and their ability to spit corrosive bile from a distance. Their ranged attack can inflict damage over time and obscure your vision.

  • Locations: Frequently encountered in swampy areas, dense forests, and the outskirts of irradiated zones. They often hide in tall grass or behind cover.
  • Strategy:
    • Close the Gap: Crawlers are vulnerable in close combat. Sprint towards them to negate their ranged advantage.
    • Melee Rush: Once you're close, a few quick melee swings (preferably headshots) will dispatch them. Be wary of their weak, flailing melee attack if you get too close.
    • Avoid Bile: If you see them winding up to spit, try to strafe or take cover. The bile debuff can be annoying and drain health.
    • Sniping: If you spot one from a distance, a single well-placed shot from a high-powered rifle (e.g., SVD, Mosin Nagant) can often kill them before they can react.
    • Loot: May drop small amounts of scrap, dirty water, or occasionally a low-tier medical item.

The Howler (Screamer)

More of a support mutant than a direct combatant, Howlers are dangerous due to their ability to alert and attract other infected to your position with a piercing scream. They are relatively weak but prioritize them to avoid being swarmed.

  • Locations: Can be found in almost any area, but are more common in areas with higher mutant populations, such as cities and industrial zones.
  • Strategy:
    • Priority Target: As soon as you hear or see a Howler, make it your primary target. Eliminate it before it can scream.
    • Stealth Kill: If possible, approach silently and use a melee weapon for a quick, quiet kill. A suppressed firearm (e.g., MP5 with Suppressor) is also effective.
    • Quick Elimination: Any firearm will take them down quickly. A single headshot from most weapons is sufficient.
    • Consequences of a Scream: If a Howler screams, be prepared for a wave of Runners and potentially a Brute to converge on your location. Find cover or prepare for a prolonged fight.
    • Loot: Very rarely drop anything of value, usually just scrap or dirty water.

The Beast (Boss Mutant)

The Beast is a rare, extremely powerful boss-level mutant. It is massive, heavily armored, and possesses devastating melee attacks as well as a powerful ground pound that can stun players. Encountering a Beast is a major threat that requires significant preparation.

  • Locations: Extremely rare spawns, typically found in high-risk, high-reward zones like the deepest parts of military bunkers, large industrial complexes, or specific irradiated hotspots. There is often a distinct environmental cue (e.g., heavy fog, strange sounds) before encountering one.
  • Strategy:
    • Team Effort: Attempting to solo a Beast is highly discouraged unless you are exceptionally well-geared and experienced. This fight is designed for multiple players.
    • Heavy Ordnance: Bring your best weapons. Assault Rifles (e.g., M4A1, AK-47), LMGs (if available), and Sniper Rifles are essential. Stock up on hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
    • Explosives are Crucial: Frag Grenades, Molotov Cocktails, and especially C4 are incredibly effective. Place C4 strategically if you can lure it over.
    • Weak Points: The Beast's head is its most vulnerable spot, but it's heavily armored. Aim for the exposed flesh on its back or legs if headshots are too difficult to land consistently.
    • Kiting and Cover: The Beast is slow but relentless. Use environmental cover (buildings, large rocks) to break line of sight and avoid its charges. Keep moving and never stand still.
    • Healing Supplies: Bring a large supply of Medkits, Bandages, and Painkillers. Expect to take damage.
    • Loot: Defeating a Beast yields some of the best loot in the game, including rare weapon blueprints, high-tier weapon attachments, large quantities of ammunition, and sometimes even rare crafting components.
