Monster Parts & Carving

In Monster Hunter Rise, obtaining monster parts is fundamental to crafting and upgrading your weapons and armor. These materials are primarily acquired through carving defeated monsters, but also through breaking monster parts, capturing, and quest rewards. Understanding the mechanics of material acquisition is key to efficient progression.

Carving Defeated Monsters

Once a large monster is slain, its body will remain on the field for a limited time, typically 60 seconds. During this window, you can approach the monster and initiate the carving animation. Each carve attempt has a chance to yield specific monster materials. The number of carves you get depends on the monster's size and type, usually ranging from 3 to 4 carves for large monsters.

  • Actionable Step: After defeating a large monster, immediately run to its body. Press the interact button (typically 'A' on Nintendo Switch, 'E' on PC) repeatedly to carve until the monster despawns or you've exhausted all carving opportunities.
  • Strategy: Prioritize carving over gathering other items if time is short, especially for rare materials. If playing in a group, coordinate with your teammates to ensure everyone gets their carves.

Breaking Monster Parts

Many monsters have specific body parts that can be damaged and eventually broken off. Breaking these parts often yields unique materials that are difficult or impossible to obtain through regular carving. Examples include breaking a Rathalos's wings for Rathalos Wingtalons or severing a Magnamalo's tail for Magnamalo Tail.

  • Actionable Step: Focus your attacks on specific monster parts. The Hunter's Notes (accessible from the Start Menu) provide detailed information on a monster's breakable parts and their associated weaknesses.
  • Strategy: Use weapons with high severing damage (Great Sword, Long Sword, Sword & Shield, Dual Blades, Charge Blade, Switch Axe, Insect Glaive) for tails, and bludgeoning damage (Hammer, Hunting Horn) for heads or hard shells. Ranged weapons can also target specific parts effectively.
  • Item Example: To get a Diablos Horn, you must break both of Diablos's horns during the hunt. This often requires focusing attacks on its head.

Capturing Monsters

Capturing a monster instead of slaying it can sometimes yield different or additional materials, and often provides more quest rewards. To capture a monster, you must first weaken it significantly (until its icon on the mini-map turns blue and it starts limping), then trap it, and finally hit it with two Tranq Bombs.

  • Actionable Step:
    1. Carry Shock Traps or Pitfall Traps and Tranq Bombs on your hunts.
    2. Monitor the monster's health. When it starts limping or its icon turns blue, it's ready for capture.
    3. Place a trap in its path or directly under it.
    4. Once trapped, throw two Tranq Bombs at the monster.
  • Strategy: Capturing often ends the quest faster than slaying, which can be beneficial for farming. Some rare materials, like Wyvern Tears or specific monster gems, have a higher chance of dropping from capture rewards.

Gathering from Dropped Materials

During a hunt, monsters will occasionally drop materials when they take significant damage, are knocked down, or clash with other monsters. These dropped items appear as shiny spots on the ground.

  • Actionable Step: Keep an eye out for glowing spots on the ground during combat. Run over them to automatically pick up the dropped material.
  • Strategy: These drops can include valuable items like Monster Fluid, Wyvern Tears, or even rare monster parts. Don't ignore them, as they contribute significantly to your material collection.

Quest Rewards

Upon completing a quest, you will receive a list of rewards. These rewards often include several monster parts, including those from the target monster, as well as general materials like Iron Ore or Herb.

  • Strategy: Higher-rank quests and specific event quests often offer better chances at rare materials. Check the quest details before departing to see potential rewards.

Material Rarity and Usage

Monster parts come in various rarities, indicated by the color of their name in your item box and the Hunter's Notes. Common materials are used for basic gear, while rare materials (like Rathian Plate or Nargacuga Medulla) are essential for high-end weapons and armor, often requiring multiple hunts to acquire.

Rarity Color Typical Use
Common White Basic gear, early upgrades
Uncommon Green Mid-tier gear, common upgrades
Rare Blue Advanced gear, significant upgrades
Very Rare Purple High-end gear, final upgrades, decorations

Always consult the Smithy to see what materials are needed for your desired equipment, and then plan your hunts accordingly.
