·Multi-source verified (92/92)

The foundation of your success in Monster Hunter Rise lies in its intricate Weaponry and Armor Systems. Choosing the right gear is not just about raw power; it's about synergizing weapon strengths with armor skills to create builds that counter specific monsters and enhance your hunting style.

The 14 Weapon Types

Monster Hunter Rise features 14 distinct weapon classes, each with a unique moveset, combat style, and Silkbind Attacks. These range from the swift, aggressive Dual Blades and the balanced Sword & Shield to the strategic Charge Blade and the aerial Insect Glaive. Understanding the nuances of each weapon is crucial for effective hunting.

  • Melee Weapons: Great Sword, Long Sword, Sword & Shield, Dual Blades, Hammer, Hunting Horn, Lance, Gunlance, Switch Axe, Charge Blade, Insect Glaive.
  • Ranged Weapons: Light Bowgun, Heavy Bowgun, Bow.

Each weapon has its own progression tree, allowing you to craft and upgrade them using monster materials. Key stats include Raw Damage, Elemental Damage (Fire, Water, Thunder, Ice, Dragon), Sharpness, Affinity (Critical Hit chance), and Decoration Slots.

Armor and Skills

Armor pieces (Head, Chest, Arms, Waist, Legs) provide defensive stats and, more importantly, grant Skill Points. When you accumulate enough points in a particular skill, it activates, providing beneficial effects.

  • Skill Categories: Skills can be broadly categorized into offensive (e.g., Attack Boost, Critical Eye, Weakness Exploit), defensive (e.g., Defense Boost, Health Boost, Guard), utility (e.g., Speed Sharpening, Earplug), and elemental/status (e.g., Fire Attack, Poison Attack).
  • Skill Tiers: Most skills have multiple levels, with higher levels providing greater benefits.
  • Decoration Slots: Armor pieces also have decoration slots, allowing you to insert Decorations (crafted items) to add or enhance skills.

Crafting and Upgrading Gear

New weapons and armor are crafted at the Smithy using materials obtained from hunting monsters, mining, and gathering. As you progress through Low Rank, High Rank, and Master Rank, you'll unlock access to stronger monsters and rarer materials, allowing for the creation of more powerful gear.

  • Weapon Trees: Weapons are organized into trees, where upgrading a weapon often leads to branching paths with different strengths (e.g., raw damage vs. elemental damage).
  • Armor Sets: While mixing and matching armor pieces is common for optimizing skills, complete armor sets often provide set bonuses that grant additional powerful skills.

Layered Armor

Layered Armor allows you to change your hunter's appearance independently of their equipped armor. This is purely cosmetic, letting you maintain your desired look while wearing the most effective gear for a hunt.

Augmenting (Sunbreak)

In the Sunbreak expansion, Master Rank gear can be augmented at the Smithy. Augmenting allows you to further enhance your weapons and armor by adding new skills, increasing stats, or improving decoration slots, providing a deep endgame progression system.

Building Effective Sets

The process of building an effective gear set involves:

  1. Identifying Your Goal: Are you focusing on raw damage, elemental damage, survivability, or a specific status effect?
  2. Choosing a Weapon: Select a weapon that suits your playstyle and is effective against your target monster.
  3. Selecting Armor: Prioritize armor pieces that provide the core skills needed for your build.
  4. Using Decorations: Fill in the gaps and fine-tune your skills using Decorations.
  5. Considering Buddy Gear: craft and upgrade gear for your Palicoes and Palamutes.
