HR 1 Quests: Forging Your Hunter's Path
Welcome, aspiring hunter, to the Hunter Rank (HR) 1 progression in Monster Hunter Rise! This crucial stage marks your transition from the foundational Village Quests to the more challenging and rewarding Hub Quests, where you'll team up with other hunters or test your mettle solo against tougher monsters. HR 1 focuses on solidifying your combat fundamentals, understanding monster behaviors, and preparing you for the trials ahead. This guide will walk you through the essential Key Quests and Urgent Quests, offering detailed strategies, recommended gear, and invaluable tips to ensure your success.
Understanding HR Progression: Key Quests and Urgent Quests
In the Hunter's Hub, progression is tied to completing specific "Key Quests" that unlock "Urgent Quests." Successfully clearing an Urgent Quest will advance your Hunter Rank. For HR 1, you'll need to complete a set number of Key Quests before the Urgent Quests become available. Don't worry about tackling every single quest; focus on the ones marked with a red bubble icon in the quest list – these are your Key Quests.
Recommended Preparations for HR 1
- Gear Up: Ensure your weapon is upgraded to its highest available level from the Smithy. Craft the best armor set you can afford from materials gathered in Village Quests or early Hub expeditions. The Izuchi, Arzuros, or Kulu-Ya-Ku armor sets offer good defensive stats and useful early-game skills.
- Items: Always carry a full stock of Potions, Mega Potions, Whetstones, and Rations/Steaks. Consider bringing a few Flash Bombs for flying monsters and Shock Traps/Pitfall Traps for capturing. Antidotes are essential for monsters that inflict poison.
- Dango: Visit the Tea Shop before each quest. Prioritize Dango that boost attack, defense, or provide useful resistances (e.g., Dango Defender, Dango Fighter).
- Companions: Your Palico and Palamute are invaluable. Ensure they are equipped with decent gear and have their support skills set appropriately. A Healer Palico is excellent for solo play, while a Fighter Palico can add significant damage.
HR 1 Key Quests: Building Your Foundation
To unlock the HR 1 Urgent Quests, you'll typically need to complete a few of the following Key Quests. These quests introduce you to monsters you might have encountered in Village Quests, but with increased health and damage suitable for Hub play.
Key Quest: Great Izuchi, Great Pain
- Objective: Hunt a Great Izuchi.
- Location: Shrine Ruins.
- Strategy: The Great Izuchi serves as an excellent warm-up. It's a relatively straightforward monster. Focus on its head and tail for weak points. Watch out for its tail spin attack and its coordinated attacks with its smaller Izuchi pack. Dodge through its charges. This is a good opportunity to practice your weapon's basic combos and evasive maneuvers.
- Rewards: Great Izuchi Hide, Great Izuchi Pelt, Great Izuchi Claw, Monster Bone S.
Key Quest: Wroggi Strike
- Objective: Hunt a Great Wroggi.
- Location: Shrine Ruins.
- Strategy: The Great Wroggi is known for its poisonous attacks. Its primary threat is the poisonous gas it exhales. Always carry Antidotes! When it rears its head back, prepare to dodge its poison spit. Its head is a weak point, but be cautious of its bite attacks. Breaking its head can reduce the potency or frequency of its poison attacks.
- Rewards: Great Wroggi Hide, Great Wroggi Scale, Great Wroggi Claw, Poison Sac.
Key Quest: The Arzuros's Awful Appetite
- Objective: Hunt an Arzuros.
- Location: Shrine Ruins.
- Strategy: The Arzuros is a large, bear-like Fanged Beast. It's aggressive and loves to charge. Its weak points are its head and hind legs. Be mindful of its powerful claw swipes and its "bear hug" attack, which can deal significant damage. When it stands on its hind legs, it's often preparing for a slam or a series of swipes. Focus on dodging to its sides or behind it.
- Rewards: Arzuros Pelt, Arzuros Shell, Arzuros Claw, Monster Bone M.
Key Quest: Feathered Frenzy
- Objective: Hunt a Kulu-Ya-Ku.
- Location: Shrine Ruins.
- Strategy: The Kulu-Ya-Ku is a Bird Wyvern that often uses a rock as a weapon. When it picks up a rock, its head becomes armored, and its attacks deal more damage. Use Flash Bombs to make it drop the rock, or attack its legs to trip it. Its head is a weak point when not armored. It's relatively quick, so maintain good positioning.
- Rewards: Kulu-Ya-Ku Hide, Kulu-Ya-Ku Scale, Kulu-Ya-Ku Plume, Bird Wyvern Gem.
HR 1 Urgent Quests: The True Test
Once you've completed enough Key Quests, the following Urgent Quests will become available. Successfully completing these will advance your Hunter Rank.
Urgent Quest: The Looming Calamity
Objective: Hunt a Great Izuchi.
Location: Shrine Ruins.
Strategy: This is your first Hub Urgent Quest, essentially a re-introduction to the Great Izuchi but with Hub scaling. The strategies remain largely the same as the Village version, but be prepared for a longer and slightly more challenging fight due to increased monster health and damage. Focus on consistent damage and precise dodging. Its weak points are its head and the tip of its tail. When it calls its smaller Izuchi, prioritize taking them out quickly to avoid being overwhelmed. If playing solo, consider bringing a Palico with the Healer support type for extra sustainability, or a Fighter Palico for additional damage and monster aggro. Utilize Wirebug skills for quick repositioning and evasive maneuvers. use environmental traps like the Great Wirebugs or rockfalls if available in the area.
Weaknesses:
- Elemental: Fire (3/5), Water (2/5)
- Ailments: Blast (3/5), Paralysis (2/5)
Rewards:
- Great Izuchi Hide+
- Great Izuchi Pelt+
- Great Izuchi Claw+
- Monster Bone L
- Izuchi Tail
Urgent Quest: The Queen's Wrath
Objective: Hunt a Rathian.
Location: Shrine Ruins.
Strategy: Rathian is a formidable flying wyvern and a classic Monster Hunter monster. She is known for her powerful fire breath attacks and, more dangerously, her poisonous tail. Her tail is her most lethal weapon, especially when she performs her signature "backflip" or "tail flip" attack, which can inflict severe poison and high damage. Always carry Antidotes and Herbal Medicine! Avoid being directly behind her, as this is where her tail attacks are most prevalent. Her head is a primary weak point, but also the origin of her fire breath. When she's in the air, use Flash Bombs to knock her down, creating large openings for attack. Breaking her tail will prevent her from inflicting poison with subsequent tail swipes, significantly reducing her threat. Focus on her legs to trip her, or her head for stun opportunities. When she charges, dodge to the side. If she's enraged, her attacks become faster and more powerful. Consider bringing a weapon with Dragon or Thunder element for maximum damage.
Specific Attack Cues:
- Tail Flip: Rathian will often roar, then quickly coil her tail before performing a powerful backflip. This is her most dangerous attack; dodge to the side or under her belly.
- Fireball: She'll rear her head back slightly before spitting a fireball. This can be dodged to the side.
- Ground Charge: She'll lower her head and charge forward. Wirebug to the side to evade.
Weaknesses:
- Elemental: Dragon (3/5), Thunder (2/5)
- Ailments: Poison (0/5 - Immune), Blast (2/5), Paralysis (2/5), Sleep (2/5)
Rewards:
- Rathian Scale
- Rathian Shell
- Rathian Spike
- Flame Sac
- Rathian Plate (Rare)
Common Pitfalls and Tips for HR 1
