Elemental Weaknesses & Resistances
Mastering elemental interactions is paramount to success in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection. Each monster possesses inherent elemental affinities, making them vulnerable to certain elements while resistant to others. Understanding these relationships will dictate your party composition and the effectiveness of your attacks. For instance, a Fire-elemental monster like a Rathalos will take significantly more damage from Water or Ice attacks, while its resistance to Fire and Thunder will mitigate incoming damage from those sources. Conversely, a Zinogre, a Thunder-elemental beast, will be susceptible to Dragon and Ice attacks. Exploiting these weaknesses allows you to deal critical damage and stagger monsters more frequently, opening them up for devastating follow-up attacks and powerful Kinship Skills. Conversely, attacking a monster with an element it resists will result in greatly reduced damage, wasting precious turns and potentially leading to your defeat. Pay close attention to the elemental icons displayed above a monster's health bar during combat, as well as the detailed information available in your Hunter's Notes. Some rare monsters, like the elusive Lucent Nargacuga, may even shift their elemental affinities mid-battle, requiring constant adaptation. Always consider the elemental properties of your Monsties' attacks and your Rider's weapon skills before engaging a new foe. For example, bringing a Water-attuned Lagiacrus to a fight against a Gravios, a notoriously tough Fire-type, can drastically shorten the encounter. Remember that certain armor sets also provide elemental resistances, offering a defensive layer against specific elemental assaults. Prioritizing these resistances can be crucial when facing particularly challenging elemental bosses in areas like the Obsidian Peaks.
