Expedition & Gathering Mechanics

Venturing beyond the safety of towns and villages is essential for acquiring the resources needed to craft powerful gear and upgrade your Monsties. Expeditions are your primary means of exploring the diverse biomes of Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, from the lush Viridian Woods to the desolate Ashfall Waste. During an expedition, you'll encounter wild monsters, discover hidden paths, and, most importantly, gather valuable materials. Gathering nodes are scattered throughout the environment, appearing as shimmering points of interest. These can include ore veins, herb patches, insect nests, and even monster carcasses left behind from previous hunts. Interacting with these nodes will yield specific items. For example, mining an Iron Ore Vein might grant you Iron Ore, a common crafting material, while harvesting a Sunpetal Herb will provide Sunpetal, used in potions. Some rare gathering nodes, like those found in the Crystal Caves, may yield rarer materials such as Adamantite or rare herbs. Monster carcasses, often found after defeating a particularly large or challenging beast, can be carved for unique monster parts. For instance, carving a Great Jaggi carcass could yield Jaggi Hide and Jaggi Scales. The quality and quantity of materials gathered can sometimes be influenced by your Monstie's abilities. A Monstie with the "Gathering+" ability might yield an extra item from a node, or a Monstie with "Rock Breaker" can clear obstacles blocking access to certain areas. It's also important to manage your inventory space during expeditions, as carrying too many low-value items can prevent you from picking up rarer finds. Consider returning to a town like Hakum Village periodically to deposit excess materials at your item box. Certain quests will also require specific gathering objectives, such as collecting 10 Firestone Shards from the volcanic regions of the Blazing Caldera.

Locate gathering nodes (ore veins, herb patches, insect nests, monster carcasses).
Interact with nodes to gather materials.
Utilize Monstie abilities to enhance gathering yields or access new areas.
Manage inventory space and return to town to deposit items.
Complete gathering-specific quest objectives.
