The Charge Blade in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is a complex yet incredibly rewarding weapon that blends the defensive capabilities of a shield with the explosive power of axe attacks. Mastering its Iceborne moveset involves understanding the flow between sword-and-shield mode and axe mode, and effectively utilizing its sature Phial mechanics.
Sword & Shield Mode Fundamentals
In sword-and-shield mode, your primary focus is building up charges in your Phials. The standard attack combo (Triangle/Y) builds these charges. The key to efficient charging is the Guard Point, which occurs during the wind-up of certain attacks (like the forward thrust). Successfully guarding an attack during a Guard Point allows you to immediately transition into a powerful counter-attack, often leading into a charged Phial burst.
Building Phial Charges
The most efficient way to charge your Phials is through the Charged Double Slash (hold Triangle/Y after a standard combo) followed by the Spinning Axe (Circle/B after the Charged Double Slash). This sequence fills your Phials quickly. Alternatively, after a successful Guard Point, you can perform a Super Amped Elemental Discharge (SAED) directly, which consumes all charged Phials for massive damage.
Axe Mode and Discharges
Transforming into axe mode (R2+Circle/RT+B) unlocks your most potent attacks. The standard axe combo is slower but hits harder. The true power lies in the Elemental Discharge (Circle/B) and its super-charged variant, the Super Amped Elemental Discharge (SAED). The SAED is a devastating multi-hit attack that consumes all charged Phials, dealing immense damage to a wide area. In Iceborne, the SAED has been buffed, making it a cornerstone of Charge Blade gameplay.
New Iceborne Mechanics
Iceborne introduces the Artillery Secret skill, which significantly boosts the damage of your Phial explosions, making Impact Phials even more potent. Furthermore, the new Clutch Claw mechanic can be integrated. After landing a successful SAED, you can immediately use the Clutch Claw to latch onto the monster, allowing for repositioning or a free attack.
Key Combos to Practice
- Basic Charge Combo: Triangle/Y (x3) -> Hold Triangle/Y (Charged Double Slash) -> Circle/B (Spinning Axe)
- Guard Point Counter to SAED: Perform a Guard Point -> Immediately press R2+Triangle/RT+Y (Elemental Discharge) -> Circle/B (SAED)
- Axe Mode Combo: Transform to Axe -> Triangle/Y (x2) -> Circle/B (Axe Combo)
Remember to manage your Phial colors (red for Impact, yellow for Elemental) and always aim to land your SAEDs on weak points or when the monster is downed for maximum impact.
