Clutch Claw Explained — Monster Hunter World: Iceborne Guide

Dominate monsters with the Clutch Claw in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. Master its mechanics for grappling onto monsters and executing new offensive strategi.

The Clutch Claw is a revolutionary new tool introduced in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, fundamentally changing combat by allowing hunters to grapple onto monsters. Mastering its use opens up new offensive and defensive strategies.

Clutch Claw Mechanics:

The Clutch Claw is equipped automatically and can be used by pressing the dedicated button (L2/LT + R2/RT, or equivalent on PC). Once fired, it latches onto a monster's body part.

  • Grappling: Fire the Clutch Claw towards a monster. If successful, you'll latch onto a specific body part.
  • Movement on Monster: Once attached, you can use the left analog stick to move around the monster's body.
  • Clutch Claw Attacks: While attached, you can perform specific attacks:
    • Wound Part: Repeatedly attacking the same part with your weapon while attached will "wound" it, making it more susceptible to damage and breaking.
    • Clutch Claw Attack: A quick jab that deals minor damage and can stagger a monster.
  • Disengaging: Press the dodge button to detach.

Clutch Claw Uses:

  • Wounding Parts: This is the primary use. Wounded parts take more damage and are easier to break, leading to more rewards and potential stuns.
  • Mounting/Toppling: Successfully wounding a part multiple times can lead to the monster stumbling or becoming temporarily incapacitated, creating openings for attacks.
  • Slinger Ammo Usage: You can fire Slinger ammo (if you have any) while attached to the Clutch Claw, dealing additional damage or triggering environmental effects.
  • Evading Attacks: In some cases, latching onto a monster can help you evade certain attacks by positioning you differently.
  • Weapon Synergy: Certain weapons have unique interactions with the Clutch Claw. For example, the Charge Blade can use the Clutch Claw to speed up phial charging.

Advanced Techniques:

  • Clutch Claw Boost: After successfully wounding a part, you can perform a Clutch Claw Boost. This involves pressing the attack button while attached, which can lead to a powerful attack or a monster stagger.
  • Slinger Burst: After a successful Clutch Claw attack or boost, you can immediately follow up with a Slinger Burst, which fires all held Slinger ammo in a rapid volley. This is excellent for interrupting monsters or dealing burst damage.
  • Flinch Shot: If you have Slinger ammo (like stones or scatter nuts) and are attached to a monster's head, you can perform a Flinch Shot. This fires all your Slinger ammo at the monster's head, often causing it to flinch or even fall over, creating a massive opening. This is one of the most powerful uses of the Clutch Claw.

Tip: Practice using the Clutch Claw in the Training Area. Learn to aim for specific parts and master the timing of the Flinch Shot. It's a game-changer for all weapon types.
