Great Jagras
The Great Jagras is often one of the first large monsters new hunters encounter, serving as an excellent introduction to Monster Hunter: World's combat mechanics. Don't underestimate this Fanged Wyvern; while relatively docile, it can still pack a punch if provoked.
- Habitat: Ancient Forest (Areas 1, 2, 4, 6)
- Weaknesses:
- Elemental: Fire (3-star), Thunder (2-star)
- Ailments: Poison (2-star), Paralysis (2-star), Sleep (2-star), Stun (2-star)
- Breakable Parts: Head, Forelegs, Tail (severable)
- Strategy:
- Initial Encounter: The Great Jagras often begins in Area 1 or 2 of the Ancient Forest. Follow its tracks (scat, claw marks) to locate it.
- Exploiting Weaknesses: Focus attacks on its head for maximum damage. When it consumes Aptonoth or Kestodon, its belly will swell. This is a prime target for attacks, and breaking it will cause it to regurgitate its meal, leaving it vulnerable and providing a chance for extra carves (e.g., Jagras Scale, Jagras Hide).
- Attacks to Watch For:
- Body Slam: A slow, telegraphed attack where it rears up and slams its body down. Dodge to the side.
- Tongue Lash: A quick, short-range attack.
- Regurgitation: If its belly is full, it might spit out a stream of fluid. This is a good opening to attack its head or flanks.
- Recommended Gear: Early game weapons with Fire element are effective. Armor with Defense Boost or Health Boost skills will aid survivability.
- Useful Items:
- Flash Pods: Can briefly stun the Great Jagras, especially useful when it's charging or attempting to escape.
- Tranq Bombs: Essential for capturing. Bring 2-3.
- Shock Trap/Pitfall Trap: Use these when the Great Jagras is limping (indicating low health) to capture it.
- Carves & Rewards:
- Jagras Scale, Jagras Hide, Jagras Claw, Jagras Fang, Monster Bone S
- Great Jagras Hide, Great Jagras Scale, Great Jagras Claw, Great Jagras Mane
Pukei-Pukei
The colorful Pukei-Pukei is a Bird Wyvern known for its venomous attacks and deceptive agility. Its ability to store and spit various substances makes it a unique challenge in the Ancient Forest.
- Habitat: Ancient Forest (Areas 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, 14)
- Weaknesses:
- Elemental: Thunder (3-star), Ice (2-star)
- Ailments: Paralysis (3-star), Sleep (2-star), Stun (2-star)
- Breakable Parts: Head, Wings, Tail (severable)
- Strategy:
- Initial Encounter: Pukei-Pukei often starts in the central areas of the Ancient Forest, particularly around Area 6 or 8. Keep an eye out for its distinctive calls.
- Poison Management: Pukei-Pukei's primary threat is its poison. Carry several Antidotes or craft Herbal Medicine (Antidote + Blue Mushroom) for faster recovery. Equipping armor with Poison Resistance is highly recommended.
- Targeting the Tail: Its tail is a key weak point and can be severed, reducing the range and potency of some of its poison attacks. Focus damage here early in the fight.
- Exploiting its Tongue: Pukei-Pukei often uses its long tongue to gather resources (e.g., berries, water) which it then incorporates into its venom. While it's doing this, it's vulnerable.
- Attacks to Watch For:
- Poison Spit: A direct projectile that inflicts poison. Dodge to the side.
- Poison Spray (Tail): If its tail is intact, it can spray a wide arc of poison. Get behind it or move far away.
- Tongue Lash: A surprisingly long-reaching melee attack.
- Flight & Dive: It will occasionally take to the air and dive at you. Keep moving and be ready to dodge.
- Recommended Gear: Thunder element weapons are very effective. Armor with Poison Resistance is a game-changer.
- Useful Items:
- Antidotes/Herbal Medicine: Absolute must-haves.
- Flash Pods: Can knock Pukei-Pukei out of the air or interrupt its poison attacks.
- Tranq Bombs & Traps: For capturing.
- Carves & Rewards:
- Pukei-Pukei Scale, Pukei-Pukei Quill, Pukei-Pukei Shell, Pukei-Pukei Sac, Monster Bone M
- Pukei-Pukei Tail, Pukei-Pukei Wing
