Beginner Tips for New Hunters
New hunters in Monster Hunter: World can optimize their progression and rewards by understanding key mechanics. Capturing Master Rank monsters generally provides more rewards than slaying them, so always aim to capture unless the quest specifies slaying. Engaging with villagers and fully researching monsters are crucial for unlocking new content and quests, including important Mantle Upgrades.
- Capturing Monsters: Capturing Master Rank monsters yields more rewards than slaying them. If a quest does not explicitly state "slay," always aim to capture the targeted monster(s).
- Unlocking Quests: Talking to villagers with a "!" in Seliana or the Research Station may unlock new quests. Completing already owned Optional quests can also unlock new content.
- Monster Research: Fully researching monsters (all 4 tabs in the monster manual) may be required to unlock certain quests, especially for Mantle Upgrades. Refer to Ecological Research for more information.
- Progress Limitations: Your current progress level for Master Rank Assignments may limit which optional quests you have access to. The same applies to Special Assignments.
- "Purr-fect" Quests: All "Purr-fect" quests reward In-Room Decorations.
- Early Game Encounters: The game often transitions from a simple hunt for Kestodon morphs into a Great Jagras hunt. You can either return to town to start the Great Jagras quest or continue directly from "A Kestodon Kerfuffle."
- New Camps: During an expedition, meet a hunter in the north-east corner of the map in zone 12. He will show you a new camp location, which requires hunting a Kulu Ya-Ku that has made it its home.
- Challenging Monsters: The Barroth is a large and durable monster. For new players, using SOS Flares to call for help from other hunters is highly recommended to make the fight easier.
- Weapon Choice: The Great Hammer, with its Charged R2 whirlwind attack, is a powerful and easy-to-use beginner's weapon.
- Status Ailments: The Tobi-Kadachi is lightning-based and can inflict Thunderblight. Prepare accordingly for this status ailment.
