Layered Armor allows you to customize your appearance without sacrificing the stats and skills of your equipped armor set. What is Layered Armor?

Layered Armor is a cosmetic overlay that changes the appearance of your equipped armor pieces. It has no impact on your defense, resistances, or skills. This means you can wear your optimal build for challenging hunts while still sporting your favorite aesthetic. Think of it as a separate wardrobe for your hunter.

Unlocking Layered Armor

The ability to craft Layered Armor becomes available at different stages of your Monster Hunter: World journey, primarily through the completion of specific quests and the acquisition of unique materials. The primary location for crafting Layered Armor is the Smithy in Astera.

Early Game Layered Armor (Base Game)

Initially, your options for Layered Armor will be limited. Most early Layered Armor pieces are tied to completing specific Event Quests or achieving certain Hunter Rank (HR) milestones.

Low Rank & High Rank Armor Sets: Many of the standard monster armor sets from Low Rank and High Rank can eventually be crafted as Layered Armor. These typically require a special ticket from an Event Quest and monster materials. Keep an eye on the Event Quest schedule!
Special Event Quests: Look for quests like "SDF: Silent, Deadly, and Fierce" (for the Shadow Shades Layered Armor) or seasonal festival quests (e.g., Spring Blossom Festival, Summer Twilight Festival) that often reward unique tickets for crafting themed Layered Armor.
Delivery Quests: Some Layered Armor pieces are unlocked by completing Delivery Quests at the Resource Center. These often involve gathering specific endemic life or rare account items.

Iceborne Expansion Layered Armor

With the Iceborne expansion, the Layered Armor system was significantly expanded, making almost every armor set available as a layered option. The primary method for crafting these is through the Guiding Lands.

Guiding Lands Materials: The vast majority of Master Rank Layered Armor sets require unique materials found exclusively in the Guiding Lands. These include:
- Tempered Monster Materials: Drops from tempered versions of monsters in the Guiding Lands (e.g., Tempered Dragonbone, Tempered Cragbone).
- Region-Specific Materials: Gathered from mining outcrops and bonepiles in specific Guiding Lands regions (e.g., Forest Region Bone, Volcanic Region Ore).
- Spiritvein Gems: Rare drops from tempered monsters in the Guiding Lands, essential for many high-tier Layered Armor pieces.
Research Commission Tickets+: These special tickets are often required alongside Guiding Lands materials. They are typically awarded for completing challenging Master Rank quests, particularly those involving Elder Dragons or tempered monsters.
Elder Melder: The Elder Melder in Astera or Seliana can be used to meld some rarer Guiding Lands materials or tickets if you're struggling to obtain them directly.

Crafting Layered Armor

Visit the Smithy in Astera or Seliana.
Select the "Forge/Upgrade Armor" option.
Navigate to the "Forge Layered Armor" tab.
Browse the available Layered Armor pieces and select the one you wish to craft.

Equipping and Customizing Layered Armor

After crafting your desired Layered Armor, you can equip and customize it:

Go to your Item Box in your room, the Astera/Seliana hub, or any camp.
Select "Manage Layered Armor."
Choose the specific armor slot (Head, Chest, Arms, Waist, Legs) you wish to change.
Select the Layered Armor piece you want to equip.
Changing Colors: Many Layered Armor pieces can have their colors adjusted. In the "Manage Layered Armor" menu, select the equipped Layered Armor piece and then choose "Change Color."
