Monster Compendium
The Monster Hunter: World compendium is your ultimate resource for understanding the vast array of creatures that inhabit the New World. Each monster presents a unique challenge, with distinct attack patterns, behaviors, strengths, and weaknesses. Mastering this compendium is essential for any hunter aiming to succeed, from their first timid steps in Astera to the most perilous endgame hunts.
Within the compendium, you'll find detailed information on every monster you encounter. This includes their habitat, dietary habits, elemental and status effect vulnerabilities, physical weak points, and even their temperaments. The more you observe and fight a monster, the more information the compendium will reveal, unlocking crucial insights that can turn the tide of battle. This knowledge is not just for academic interest; it directly translates into more efficient hunts, better gear crafting, and ultimately, greater success in your hunter career.
Key Information Provided for Each Monster
For each monster, the compendium offers a wealth of data:
- Habitat: Where the monster can be found, including specific zones within larger regions.
- Element & Status Weaknesses/Resistances: Crucial information for tailoring your weapon and armor choices. This section will detail which elements (Fire, Water, Thunder, Ice, Dragon) and status effects (Poison, Paralysis, Sleep, Blast, Stun) are most effective or least effective against the monster.
- Weak Points: Specific body parts that take increased damage from certain attack types (e.g., head for blunt damage, tail for severing).
- Breakable Parts: Parts of the monster that can be broken off, often yielding rare materials and sometimes altering the monster's attack patterns or capabilities.
- Behavioral Patterns: Insights into how the monster moves, attacks, and reacts to different situations, such as when it's enraged or when it's injured.
- Materials Dropped: A list of the items you can obtain from hunting and carving the monster, essential for crafting weapons and armor.
How to Access and Utilize the Compendium
The Monster Compendium is primarily accessed through your Hunter's Notes, which you can open from the pause menu. Information is unlocked progressively:
- Scouting: When you first encounter a monster, you'll have very little information. Using your Scoutflies to follow tracks and gather monster research points will gradually fill out the compendium entries.
- Observation: Simply observing a monster during a hunt, without attacking, can also yield research points.
- Fighting: Engaging in combat and dealing damage is the most effective way to gather detailed information. Breaking parts and capturing monsters also contribute significantly to research levels.
- Hunter's Notes: Once you have gathered enough research points for a specific monster, its entry in the Hunter's Notes will become fully detailed, providing all the necessary information for your next hunt.
Why the Compendium is Crucial
- Efficient Hunts: Knowing a monster's weaknesses allows you to equip the correct elemental damage and target its weak points, drastically reducing hunt times.
- Gear Crafting: The compendium lists the materials dropped by each monster, guiding you on what to hunt for specific armor and weapon sets.
- Survival: Understanding a monster's attack patterns and resistances helps you prepare the right armor and skills to mitigate damage and avoid debilitating status effects.
- Quest Completion: Many quests require you to hunt specific monsters. Having a well-researched understanding of your target makes these quests significantly easier.
Example: Rathalos Entry
A fully researched Rathalos entry in your compendium would reveal its primary weakness to Dragon element, its resistance to Fire, its weak points (head, wings), breakable parts (wings, tail), its aerial combat style, and the materials you can carve from it. This information would immediately tell you to equip a Dragon-element weapon and focus attacks on its wings when it's airborne.
The Monster Compendium is more than just a bestiary; it's your strategic guide to survival and success in the New World. Invest time in researching every monster you encounter, and you'll find yourself a far more capable and confident hunter.
