Siege Tactics & Defense Strategies
Sieges are a defining feature of Mount & Blade: Warband, offering high-stakes battles for control of castles and towns. Whether you are attacking or defending, understanding siege mechanics is paramount. When attacking, your primary goal is to breach the defenses. This can be achieved through siege engines like trebuchets and siege towers, or by directly assaulting the walls. Trebuchets are effective at destroying walls and gates from a distance, while siege towers allow your troops to directly assault the ramparts. Ladders are a more direct but riskier approach, often resulting in heavy casualties as your soldiers climb exposed to enemy fire.
During a siege, the defender has the advantage of terrain and fortifications. Archers on the walls can rain down arrows and bolts on attacking forces, while defenders can utilize boiling oil and other traps. It's crucial for attackers to suppress enemy archers before committing to an assault. Using your own archers and skirmishers to pick off defenders on the walls is a common tactic. Once the walls are breached or a siege tower reaches the ramparts, your infantry will engage the defenders in close-quarters combat. Controlling choke points and pushing forward methodically is key to overcoming the defenders.
Defending a siege requires a strong garrison and strategic placement of troops. Archers should be positioned on the walls to maximize their firing arcs. Infantry should be ready to defend breaches and repel attackers attempting to climb ladders. Commanders should also consider using their own siege engines to counter enemy siege weapons. If the enemy attempts to starve you out, managing your food supplies becomes critical. A successful defense often involves repelling multiple waves of attackers and preventing them from breaching your defenses. The outcome of a siege can dramatically shift the balance of power in Calradia.
- Attacking: Utilize siege engines (trebuchets, siege towers) and ladders to breach defenses. Suppress enemy archers before assaulting.
- Defending: Position archers on walls, prepare infantry at breaches, and use siege engines to counter attackers.
- Key Elements: Wall integrity, gate strength, enemy morale, and troop positioning are critical factors.
- Resource Management: For defenders, food supplies are vital during prolonged sieges.
