Transportation & Mounts
Navigating the vast and often challenging terrain of Sandrock requires efficient transportation. Early in your journey, you'll rely on your own two feet, but as your workshop grows, so too will your options for faster travel. This section details how to acquire and utilize various mounts, along with strategies for optimizing your travel time.
Acquiring Your First Mount: The Yakmel
Your first opportunity to acquire a mount will be through the main story questline. Specifically, after you've progressed sufficiently and completed the "A New Friend" mission, you'll be introduced to the concept of mounts.
- The Yakmel Station: Head to the Yakmel Station located just outside of town, near the northern entrance. Here, you'll find Cooper, who manages the station and the available Yakmel.
- Renting a Yakmel: Initially, you'll have the option to rent a Yakmel for a daily fee. This is a good way to get accustomed to mount controls and speed up early-game resource gathering. Speak to Cooper and select the "Rent Yakmel" option.
- Purchasing a Yakmel: To own your very own Yakmel, you'll need to complete a specific quest chain that involves helping Cooper with various tasks around the station. This typically involves:
- Repairing the Fences: Cooper will ask for materials like Wood Planks (x10) and Stone Bricks (x5). These can be crafted at your Worktable.
- Gathering Feed: You might be tasked with collecting Sandberry (x20) or Desert Grass (x15) from the surrounding desert.
- Once these tasks are complete, Cooper will offer you a Yakmel for purchase. The price can vary, but expect to pay around 2000 Gols.
Mount Management & Upgrades
Once you own a mount, proper care and upgrades will enhance its performance and your overall travel experience.
- Mount Stable: You'll need to construct a Mount Stable on your workshop property to house your Yakmel. The blueprint for the Mount Stable can be purchased from the Construction Junction shop, run by Owen.
- Materials for Mount Stable: Expect to need Hardwood Planks (x20), Iron Bars (x10), and Stone Slabs (x15).
- Feeding Your Mount: Mounts require food to maintain their stamina and happiness. You can purchase Yakmel Feed from Cooper at the Yakmel Station or craft it at your Blender using Sandberry and Desert Grass. A well-fed mount will have higher stamina regeneration.
- Mount Gear: As you progress, you'll unlock blueprints for various mount gear that can improve speed, stamina, and even carrying capacity.
- Saddle: Improves comfort and control. Blueprint available from Construction Junction after a certain story point.
- Reinforced Bridle: Increases mount speed. Blueprint often found in Abandoned Ruins or as a reward from specific commissions.
- Cargo Saddlebags: Adds inventory slots to your mount, allowing you to carry more resources. Blueprint can be purchased from Byrne's General Store.
Advanced Transportation: The Hoverboard
For the truly modern builder, the Hoverboard offers a sleek and fast alternative to traditional mounts. This advanced piece of technology becomes available much later in the game.
- Unlocking the Hoverboard: The Hoverboard is a reward for completing a significant late-game main story quest, typically involving the research and development of advanced machinery. Keep an eye out for quests from Qi at the Research Center that focus on new inventions.
- Hoverboard Mechanics: Unlike mounts, the Hoverboard does not require feeding or a stable. It runs on Power Stones, which can be found in deeper ruins or purchased from the Commerce Guild Store.
- Hoverboard Upgrades: Similar to mounts, the Hoverboard can be upgraded to improve speed and energy efficiency. These upgrades are typically researched at the Research Center by providing Qi with specific data discs and rare materials like Advanced Circuits or Quantum Processors.
Fast Travel System
Beyond mounts, Sandrock offers a convenient fast travel system to quickly move between key locations.
- Teleportation Points: Throughout Sandrock and its surrounding areas, you'll discover various Teleportation Points, marked by glowing blue pillars. Interacting with one will activate it, allowing you to instantly travel to any other activated point on your map.
- Map Usage: To fast travel, open your map (default key: M), select an activated Teleportation Point, and confirm your destination. This is invaluable for saving time when completing commissions or returning to your workshop.
