Workshop Location & Setup
Establishing an efficient workshop is paramount to your success as a Builder in Sandrock. Your initial plot of land, granted during the "Welcome to Sandrock" quest, serves as your base of operations. Strategic placement of machines and thoughtful expansion will significantly impact your productivity and resource management.
Initial Workshop Placement: The Essentials
Upon arriving in Sandrock, your workshop plot is a blank canvas. While you have the freedom to arrange things as you see fit, consider these early-game strategies for optimal flow:
- The Assembly Station: This is your most crucial early-game machine. Place it centrally on your plot, perhaps slightly elevated or on a foundation, to make it easily accessible from all directions. You'll be interacting with it constantly to construct larger items.
- Worktable: Your crafting hub for basic tools and components. Keep it close to your storage boxes for quick access to materials.
- Storage Boxes: Clutter is the enemy of efficiency! Craft several Wooden Storage Boxes as soon as possible. Place them in a designated area, perhaps against a fence or wall, to keep your plot tidy. Group similar items (ores, wood, processed materials) into specific boxes for easier retrieval.
- Basic Processors:
- Recycling Machine: Essential for turning scrap into valuable materials like Iron Ore and Copper Ore. Place it near your storage and the entrance to the Eufaula Salvage Abandoned Ruins for convenience.
- Stone Furnace: Your first step in processing raw ores into ingots. Position it close to your Recycling Machine and storage.
- Wood Storage: While not a machine, having a dedicated spot for your collected wood is vital. You'll be gathering a lot of it!
Optimizing Your Layout for Growth
As you progress through quests like "Becoming Official" and unlock new blueprints, your workshop will expand. Plan ahead for future additions:
- Designated Processing Zones: As you acquire more advanced processors (e.g., Civilian Furnace, Grinder, Cutter), create distinct zones for different types of processing. For example, all ore-to-ingot machines in one area, and all wood/stone processing in another.
- Pathways: Leave clear pathways between your machines, storage, and the Assembly Station. This minimizes travel time and makes navigating your workshop less frustrating.
- Water Access: Many machines, especially later-game ones, require water. Consider placing water-intensive machines closer to your Water Tank or where you plan to expand your water infrastructure. Remember to regularly check the water levels, as highlighted in the "How to Get More Water" guide.
- Future Expansion: Your workshop plot can be expanded by purchasing additional land from the Construction Junction. When placing initial structures, try to leave room around the edges of your current plot for these future expansions. This prevents you from having to move everything later.
Early Game Setup Walkthrough (First Few Days)
- Clear the Plot: Use your Pickhammer and Axe to clear any rocks, trees, and debris from your starting plot. This gives you a clean slate.
- Build the Worktable: Access your crafting menu and build the Worktable. Place it near the center of your plot.
- Craft Storage: Immediately craft at least two Wooden Storage Boxes. Place them adjacent to your Worktable.
- Construct the Assembly Station: Follow the instructions for the "Welcome to Sandrock" quest. This will be your largest initial structure. Place it strategically.
- Build the Recycling Machine: Gather the necessary materials (often Scrap Metal and Wood from clearing your plot) and construct the Recycling Machine. Place it near your storage.
- Build the Stone Furnace: Once you have enough Stone (from mining or clearing your plot) and Wood, build your first Stone Furnace. Place it next to the Recycling Machine.
- Gather Resources: Head to the Eufaula Salvage Abandoned Ruins to gather Scrap and Dregs to feed your Recycling Machine and start producing Copper Ore and Iron Ore.
By following these steps, you'll lay a strong foundation for a thriving workshop, ensuring you're ready to tackle any commission Sandrock throws your way!
