Boss: Fiend Doku

Doku is a formidable early-game boss who will test your mastery of blocking, dodging, and counter-attacking. He wields a massive katana and can summon ghostly samurai. Patience and precise timing are key to overcoming this demon.

Preparation is Key

Before entering the battle, ensure you are well-equipped. You'll want to maximize your health and ninpo capacity. Here's what to look for:

  • Health: If you haven't already, find the Life of the Gods in the Monastery Plaza (after defeating Murai) and the one in the Great Bridge area. Each will increase your maximum health.
  • Ninpo: The Spirit of the Devils found in the Monk's Room (after the first encounter with Murai) will boost your Ninpo gauge.
  • Items: Stock up on Great Devil Elixirs and Devil Elixirs from the shop. These are crucial for mid-fight healing. A Talisman of Rebirth can also be a lifesaver, allowing you to revive with full health and Ninpo once per battle.
  • Weapon: The Dragon Sword is your primary weapon. Ensure it's upgraded as much as possible at the shop for increased damage output.

Doku's Attack Patterns

Doku has a predictable, yet punishing, set of attacks. Learning to recognize and react to them is paramount.

  • Three-Hit Combo: Doku will often swing his katana in a wide, three-hit arc. This is his most common attack.
    • Strategy: Block the first two hits, then immediately roll or Flying Swallow away from the third. The third hit often has a slight delay, making it easy to misjudge.
  • Overhead Slam: Doku raises his katana high above his head before bringing it down with immense force. This attack is unblockable.
    • Strategy: As soon as you see him raise his sword, perform a quick roll to the side or backward. Do NOT attempt to block.
  • Grab Attack: Doku will sometimes lunge forward to grab Ryu. If successful, he'll drain a significant portion of your health. This is also unblockable.
    • Strategy: This attack is telegraphed by Doku extending his arm slightly before lunging. Roll backward or to the side to avoid it. If you get caught, rapidly mash buttons to reduce the damage.
  • Ghost Summon: Doku will occasionally stand still and summon several ghostly samurai. These can be a major distraction.
    • Strategy: Prioritize taking out the summoned ghosts quickly with a few strong attacks or a well-placed Ninpo like the Art of the Fire Wheels. They have low health but can interrupt your attacks on Doku.
  • Lightning Attack (Phase 2): Once Doku's health is significantly lowered, he will begin to charge and unleash a powerful lightning attack.
    • Strategy: When you see him charging, immediately create distance. The lightning has a wide area of effect. A well-timed roll can evade it, but staying away is safer.

Battle Strategy

The fight against Doku is a war of attrition. Don't get greedy with your attacks.

  1. Defensive Opening: Start by focusing purely on defense. Block his three-hit combos and dodge his overhead slams and grab attacks. Observe his patterns.
  2. Counter-Attack Opportunities: After successfully blocking Doku's three-hit combo, there's a brief window to counter-attack. A simple X-Y combo (Square-Triangle on PlayStation controllers) with the Dragon Sword is effective. Do not overcommit; get a few hits in and then prepare to block or dodge again.
  3. Flying Swallow (A-X): The Flying Swallow technique is incredibly useful for closing distances and dealing quick damage, especially after Doku finishes a combo or summons ghosts. It can also be used to quickly clear out the summoned samurai.
  4. Ninpo Usage:
    • Art of the Fire Wheels: This Ninpo is excellent for clearing out the ghostly samurai Doku summons, allowing you to focus on him.
    • Inferno: If you have a full Ninpo gauge and Doku is standing still or recovering, a well-aimed Inferno can deal significant damage.
  5. Health Management: Don't hesitate to use your Devil Elixirs or Great Devil Elixirs when your health drops below 50%. It's better to use an item than to get caught in a combo and die.
  6. Phase 2 Adaptation: Once Doku starts using his lightning attack, prioritize evasion when he charges it. Continue with your hit-and-run tactics, focusing on quick combos after his attacks.
  7. Finishing Blow: When Doku is near defeat, he may become more aggressive. Maintain your defensive posture and look for the final openings. A well-timed Ultimate Technique can often finish him off.

Remember, Doku is a test of fundamental Ninja Gaiden combat. Master your blocks, dodges, and short combos, and you will emerge victorious.
