Boss: Greater Fiends
The Greater Fiends represent the pinnacle of demonic power in Ninja Gaiden Black, serving as formidable challenges that test every skill you've acquired. These battles are often multi-phased and require precise movement, weapon mastery, and strategic Ninpo usage. Always enter these encounters fully prepared.
General Preparation for Greater Fiends
- Health and Ki Management: Before initiating any Greater Fiend battle, ensure your health bar is maximized. Use a Great Devil Elixir if necessary. Replenish your Ki with Elixirs of Spiritual Strength.
- Weapon Upgrades: Prioritize upgrading your primary weapon (usually the Dragon Sword or Dragon's Claw & Tiger's Fang) to its highest level. Higher weapon levels unlock more powerful combos and increased damage output.
- Ninpo Selection: The Inferno Ninpo is generally excellent for burst damage, especially when a boss is vulnerable. Invincible Ninpo (Art of the Inazuma) can provide crucial invincibility frames for healing or repositioning in tight spots.
- Accessories: Equip accessories that complement your playstyle. The Armlet of the Sun increases attack power, while the Armlet of the Moon boosts defense. The Armlet of Fortune can be useful for farming essence before a fight.
- Essence Management: Always try to collect any available Yellow Essence before a boss fight to purchase items or upgrade weapons/Ninpo at a nearby Muramasa Statue.
Specific Greater Fiend Strategies
Alma
Alma is a swift and aggressive fiend with both melee and ranged attacks. Her fight is divided into two distinct phases.
- Phase 1: Aerial Assault
- Location: Tairon, Monastery.
- Key Attacks:
- Dive Bomb: Alma will fly high and dive straight at Ryu. This is often followed by a ground slam.
- Projectile Barrage: She launches purple energy projectiles that track Ryu.
- Grab Attack: If you get too close, she'll attempt to grab and throw Ryu.
- Strategy:
- Stay Mobile: Constantly run and roll to avoid her dive bombs and projectiles.
- Counter Dive: When she performs a dive bomb, roll towards her as she lands. This often leaves her vulnerable for a brief moment.
- Weapon of Choice: The Dragon Sword or Unlabored Flail are excellent here. Use quick combos like the Flying Swallow (forward + Y) to chip away at her health.
- Ninpo Use: Save your Inferno Ninpo for when she's grounded and stunned after a successful counter.
- Exploiting Openings: After she finishes a projectile barrage or a failed grab, she'll often hover momentarily. Use this as an opportunity for a quick aerial combo or a well-placed Ninpo.
- Phase 2: Grounded Fury
- Key Attacks:
- Charge Attack: Alma will charge across the arena, attempting to ram Ryu.
- Pillar Summon: She can summon large stone pillars from the ground.
- Melee Combos: Up close, she unleashes devastating physical attacks.
- Strategy:
- Maintain Distance (Initially): Keep your distance to bait her charge attack.
- Dodge and Counter Charge: Dodge her charge attack by rolling to the side. She'll often be momentarily vulnerable at the end of her charge.
- Utilize Wall Attacks: The arena has walls you can use for Wall Runs and Izuna Drops. An Izuna Drop (X, X, Y, X, Y in the air) is incredibly effective if you can land it.
- Ninpo for Damage: If you have full Ki, unleash Inferno Ninpo when she's stunned or recovering from an attack.
- Pillar Destruction: The summoned pillars can be destroyed for essence, but prioritize damaging Alma.
- Key Attacks:
Doku
Doku is a heavily armored samurai fiend wielding a massive katana. His attacks are slow but incredibly powerful, and he has a unique grab attack that drains Ryu's health.
- Location: Tairon, Military Base.
- Key Attacks:
- Heavy Katana Swings: Slow, wide-arc swings that deal massive damage.
- Teleporting Slash: Doku will disappear and reappear, often behind Ryu, for a quick slash.
- Essence Drain Grab: If he grabs Ryu, he'll drain a significant portion of your health. This is unblockable.
- Spirit Summon: He can summon ghost samurai to assist him.
- Strategy:
- Master the Counter-Attack: Doku's slow attacks are perfect for counter-attacking. Block his initial swing, then immediately unleash a quick combo.
- Weapon of Choice: The Dragon Sword is reliable. The Vigorian Flail can also be effective for its wide swings.
- Avoid the Grab: The most crucial aspect of this fight is avoiding his grab. Roll away immediately if you see him winding up for it.
- Deal with Summons: When Doku summons ghost samurai, prioritize taking them out quickly with area-of-effect attacks or Ninpo to prevent being overwhelmed.
- Ninpo for Damage and Safety: Inferno Ninpo can deal significant damage, especially if Doku is caught in its full effect. Art of the Inazuma can provide a moment of invincibility if you're in danger of being grabbed or hit by a heavy attack.
- Ultimate Techniques: If you can charge an Ultimate Technique (hold Y after collecting essence), it can deal massive damage, but the window to execute it safely is small.
Marbus
Marbus is a large, winged fiend who primarily attacks from the air, utilizing powerful projectiles and dive attacks.
- Location: Fiend Realm.
- Key Attacks:
- Fireball Volley: Launches multiple fireballs that track Ryu.
- Dive Attack: Flies across the arena and attempts to slam into Ryu.
- Ground Pound: If he lands, he can create a shockwave by pounding the ground.
- Wing Slash: Close-range attack with his wings.
- Strategy:
- Prioritize Ranged Attacks: The Strongbow or Inferno Ninpo are your best friends in this fight. Aim for his head or wings when he's flying.
- Stay Mobile: Constantly run and roll to avoid his fireballs and dive attacks. The arena is quite large, so use the space.
- Exploit Landing Opportunities: Marbus will occasionally land on the ground. This is your chance to unleash powerful melee combos with the Dragon Sword or Dabilahro. Be wary of his ground pound.
- Counter Dive: Similar to Alma, rolling towards him as he lands from a dive can create an opening for a quick attack.
- Ninpo for Burst Damage: Use Inferno Ninpo when he's grounded or when you need to quickly interrupt an attack.
- Wall Attacks: The walls of the arena can be used for Wall Runs to gain height for aerial attacks or to quickly reposition.
Nicchae & Ishtaros (Combined Fight)
This tag-team battle pits Ryu against two powerful Greater Fiends simultaneously, requiring careful target prioritization and crowd control.
- Location: Fiend Realm.
- Nicchae (Red Fiend):
- Attacks: Primarily melee, fast and aggressive. Can use a spinning attack and a powerful lunge.
- Weakness: More susceptible to physical damage.
- Ishtaros (Blue Fiend):
- Attacks: Primarily ranged, launches ice projectiles and can create ice pillars. Can also teleport.
- Weakness: More susceptible to Ninpo damage, especially Inferno.
- Strategy:
- Target Prioritization: Focus on one fiend at a time. Many players find it easier to eliminate Ishtaros first due to her disruptive ranged attacks.
- Weapon of Choice: The Dragon Sword is versatile. The Lunar Staff can be good for crowd control if you're struggling with both at once.
- Ninpo Management: Use Inferno Ninpo on Ishtaros to quickly reduce her health. Save some Ki for Art of the Inazuma if you get cornered.
- Separate Them: Try to keep them separated. Use the environment to your advantage, drawing one away while you attack the other.
- Dodge and Weave: Constant movement is key. Roll through their attacks and look for openings.
- Counter-Attacks: Both fiends have recovery frames after their attacks. Learn these timings to land quick combos.
- Ultimate Techniques: If you can charge an Ultimate Technique, aim it at the fiend you're currently focusing on for massive damage.
