Movement Techniques (Wall Run, Flying Swallow)

Mastering Ryu Hayabusa's movement capabilities is paramount in Ninja Gaiden Black, not just for traversal but for combat superiority. Two fundamental techniques, the Wall Run and the Flying Swallow, are introduced early and remain indispensable throughout your journey.

Wall Run

The Wall Run is your primary method for navigating vertical surfaces and crossing gaps. It allows Ryu to temporarily defy gravity, opening up new pathways and providing tactical advantages in combat.

  • Execution: To perform a Wall Run, simply jump towards a wall and hold the analog stick in the direction of the wall. Ryu will automatically begin running along its surface.
  • Wall Running Upwards: To ascend a wall, jump at it and hold the analog stick directly towards it. Ryu will run straight up until he reaches the top or runs out of momentum.
  • Wall Running Horizontally: To traverse a wall horizontally, jump at it and hold the analog stick parallel to the wall's surface (left or right). This is crucial for crossing wide chasms.
  • Wall Jumping: While Wall Running, you can press the Jump button again to perform a Wall Jump. This propels Ryu away from the wall, allowing you to reach higher ledges, change direction, or initiate an attack.
  • Wall Attack: During a Wall Run, pressing the Attack button will cause Ryu to perform a powerful aerial attack as he dismounts the wall. This is excellent for initiating combat or breaking enemy formations.
  • Practical Applications:
    • Traversal: Essential for reaching elevated platforms, crossing wide gaps, and scaling structures like the towering walls in the Tairon district or the Monastery.
    • Combat Evasion: Quickly escape dangerous ground attacks or reposition yourself by Wall Running away from enemies.
    • Aerial Combos: Combine Wall Runs with Wall Jumps and aerial attacks to extend combos and keep enemies off balance.

Flying Swallow

The Flying Swallow is a swift, airborne attack that allows Ryu to close distances rapidly and strike enemies with a powerful, often decapitating, blow. It's an invaluable tool for both offense and mobility.

  • Execution: While running or jumping, press the Attack button. Ryu will launch himself forward with his sword extended.
  • Weapon Specifics: The Flying Swallow's animation and effectiveness can vary slightly depending on the weapon equipped. The Dragon Sword, for instance, delivers a clean, swift cut.
  • Targeting: The Flying Swallow has a slight homing capability, making it effective for targeting specific enemies, even those at a distance or slightly above/below Ryu.
  • Key Strategies:
    • Initiating Combat: Use the Flying Swallow to quickly engage isolated enemies or to break through enemy lines, often leaving weaker foes decapitated.
    • Gap Closer: Bridge distances between Ryu and ranged attackers like archers or spellcasters, preventing them from setting up their attacks.
    • Crowd Control: While not a wide-area attack, a well-placed Flying Swallow can disrupt enemy formations and create openings for follow-up attacks.
    • Finishing Blow: Against weakened enemies, especially those with exposed necks or heads, the Flying Swallow is an excellent way to secure an instant kill.
    • Environmental Interaction: In some instances, the Flying Swallow can be used to destroy specific environmental objects or trigger switches from a distance.
  • Advanced Techniques:
    • Chaining: After a Flying Swallow, you can often immediately follow up with ground combos or another Flying Swallow if an enemy is still within range.
    • Wall Run to Flying Swallow: Combine a Wall Run with a Flying Swallow by jumping off the wall and immediately executing the attack. This adds momentum and height to your strike.
