Environmental Combat — No Man's Sky Guide

In No Man's Sky, combat isn't confined to space battles or direct confrontations with Sentinels. The very environment can become a weapon, or a dangerous obstacle, during combat encounters. Understanding how to leverage or mitigate environmental factors is key to survival and victory against hostile flora, fauna, and robotic guardians.

Many planets feature hazardous weather conditions like superheated storms, blizzards, or toxic rain. During these events, your Exosuit's hazard protection drains rapidly. If you find yourself in combat during such conditions, the environment becomes an additional threat. Enemies, however, may be less affected or even thrive in these conditions. Your strategy should involve:

  • Seeking Shelter: Utilize caves, abandoned buildings, or your own constructed bases to shield yourself from the elements and gain a tactical advantage.
  • Using Terrain: Employ the terrain manipulator to create cover, block enemy line of sight, or even trap aggressive creatures.
  • Timing Your Attacks: Some weather effects, like lightning, can be unpredictable. Use them to your advantage if possible, or avoid engaging during their peak intensity.

Aggressive fauna can also be influenced by their environment. Some creatures may be more active or dangerous during specific times of day or weather conditions. Others might be territorial and attack anything that enters their domain, regardless of your intentions. When fighting these creatures:

  • Observe Behavior: Learn their patrol routes and triggers before engaging.
  • Lure Them: Use creature bait or sound to draw them into advantageous positions, such as near environmental hazards or traps.
  • Utilize Flora: Some plants might provide cover, while others could be hazardous to creatures if disturbed.

Sentinels, the robotic guardians of planets, are often found in areas with specific geological features or structures. While they are primarily a direct combat threat, their patrol routes and detection methods can be influenced by the terrain. For instance, dense foliage or rocky outcrops can provide cover, while open plains offer little protection. Consider:

  • Line of Sight: Use the environment to break line of sight and evade Sentinel patrols or attacks.
  • Choke Points: Funnel enemies into narrow passages where their numbers are less effective.
  • High Ground: Gaining a vantage point can offer better visibility and defensive positioning.

Remember that your starship and Exocraft also interact with the environment. Flying too low during storms can be dangerous, and certain terrain types might impede vehicle movement. Always assess the environmental conditions before initiating combat and use them to your strategic advantage whenever possible.
