Trade, Economy & Reputation
The economy of No Man's Sky is a dynamic system driven by trade, resource value, and faction reputation. Understanding how to navigate this system can lead to sificant wealth accumulation and unlock access to exclusive technologies and missions. From bartering rare goods to influencing faction standing, mastering the economic landscape is key to thriving in the galaxy.
The core of the economy revolves around Units, the universal currency. Units are earned through various activities, including mining and selling resources, completing missions, trading goods between systems, and engaging in combat with pirates. Different star systems and planets have varying demands and supplies for goods, creating opportunities for profitable trade routes.
Key Economic Activities
- Resource Gathering & Selling: Mining valuable minerals and gases, then selling them at space stations or trade outposts, is a fundamental way to earn Units. Prices fluctuate based on system economy type and demand.
- Trading Goods: Crafting or acquiring valuable trade commodities (like Circuit Boards or Living Glass) and selling them in systems where they are in high demand is a highly profitable strategy.
- Missions: Undertaking missions from Mission Boards on space stations or from Guild Envoys provides Units, Nanites, and Reputation rewards.
- Piracy: Attacking freighters and cargo pods can yield valuable loot, but it comes at the cost of your reputation with the dominant faction.
Understanding System Economies
Each star system has an economy type (e.g., Mining, Manufacturing, Technology, Exotic) that dictates the types of goods it produces and demands. Trading goods from a system that produces them to one that demands them is the basis of interstellar trade.
| Economy Type | Common Goods Produced | Common Goods Demanded |
|---|---|---|
| Mining | Raw Minerals (Cadmium, Emeril, Indium) | Refined Metals, Technology |
| Manufacturing | Processed Goods (Circuit Boards, Lubricant) | Advanced Technology, Rare Minerals |
| Technology | Tech Components (Wiring Looms, Microprocessors) | Rare Minerals, Processed Goods |
| Exotic | Unique Items (e.g., Stasis Devices) | High-value goods, specific resources |
Faction Reputation
Your actions influence your standing with the three major alien factions: the Gek, the Korvax, and the Vy'keen. Completing missions for a faction, engaging in trade within their systems, and avoiding hostile actions against them will increase your reputation. High reputation unlocks access to better missions, discounts at vendors, and unique technologies.
Conversely, attacking ships of a faction or engaging in piracy will lower your reputation, leading to increased hostility and higher prices. Managing your reputation is as important as managing your Units when navigating the galaxy.
