Life Support & Oxygen Management
Maintaining your Life Support system is fundamental to survival in No Man's Sky. Your Exosuit's Life Support provides the oxygen necessary to breathe and function, and its power reserves are constantly being consumed. Depleting your Life Support can lead to rapid damage and eventual death. The primary resource for recharging your Life Support is Oxygen. You can find Oxygen deposits on most planets, often appearing as blue crystalline structures, or by refining Carbon. Consuming pure Oxygen directly from your inventory will instantly replenish your Life Support meter. Additionally, Carbon, found abundantly from flora, can be refined into Oxygen, making it a crucial early-game resource for sustained exploration.
Beyond basic Oxygen, other consumables can aid in Life Support management. The Life Support Gel, for instance, provides a sificant recharge to your Life Support system. You can craft this gel using Carbon and Di-hydrogen. Keeping a healthy stock of these items is vital, especially when venturing far from your ship or when facing environmental conditions that increase Life Support drain, such as extreme cold or heat. The Exosuit's Life Support module itself can be upgraded with technology modules, increasing its efficiency and capacity. These upgrades, ranging from C-class to S-class, reduce the rate of oxygen consumption and increase the maximum capacity of your Life Support meter, allowing for longer periods of exploration without needing to recharge.
Pay close attention to the Life Support indicator on your HUD. When it begins to deplete, prioritize finding Oxygen or crafting Life Support Gel. If you are in a hazardous environment, the drain rate will be sificantly higher, making proactive management even more critical. For example, on a toxic planet, your Life Support will deplete faster due to the atmospheric conditions, in addition to the standard drain. Scanning for Oxygen deposits using your Multi-tool's scanner is an efficient way to locate recharge points. Some creatures may also drop Oxygen when interacted with. Mastering Life Support management is a key step in progressing beyond the initial survival phase and undertaking more ambitious expeditions across the vast universe.
