Space in No Man's Sky is not always a safe void. Players will encounter various celestial phenomena, hazards, and anomalies that require careful navigation and preparation. Understanding these can mean the difference between a smooth journey and a costly encounter.
Asteroid Fields
Asteroid fields are dense collections of space rocks. While they can be mined for valuable minerals like Titanium and Cadmium, flying through them at high speed can damage your starship. Use your ship's pulse engine judiciously, or navigate carefully to avoid collisions. Some asteroids contain rare resources that can be extracted with your mining laser.
Space Pirates and Hostile Ships
You will frequently encounter hostile ships, often referred to as space pirates. They will attack your ship, attempting to steal cargo or destroy you. Equipping your starship with effective weaponry, such as the Pulse Spitter or Infra-Knife Accelerator, and upgrading your shields is crucial for survival. Learning to dodge incoming fire and utilize your ship's maneuverability is key.
Nebulae and Cosmic Clouds
Nebulae are visually stunning clouds of gas and dust that can affect your ship's systems. Some nebulae can interfere with your hyperdrive, while others may contain valuable resources or unique environmental effects. Always check your ship's scanner for information about the nebula before entering.
Space Anomalies
Occasionally, you will encounter strange and wondrous Space Anomalies. These can range from derelict freighters, which can be boarded for loot and lore, to mysterious structures that offer unique interactions or challenges. Some anomalies might present you with choices that have sificant consequences, while others are simply points of interest to observe.
Derelict Freighters
These massive, drifting hulks are remnants of past spacefaring endeavors. Boarding a derelict freighter can yield valuable cargo, rare technology modules, and lore entries. However, they are often patrolled by hostile creatures or automated defenses. Ensure your Exosuit and ship are prepared for combat before boarding.
Sentinel Patrols in Space
While primarily a planetary threat, Sentinels can sometimes be encountered in space, particularly if you have incurred their wrath on a planet. They will attempt to disable your ship and force you to land. Evading them or engaging in ship-to-ship combat is necessary to escape their pursuit.
Hyperdrive Malfunctions and Fuel
Ensure your starship's hyperdrive is always fueled with Warp Cells or Antimatter. Running out of fuel in deep space can leave you stranded. Keep an eye on your hyperdrive charge level and always have a reserve of fuel. Some systems may have hyperdrive interference, requiring specific upgrades or alternative travel methods.
