Starship Types & Acquisition
Starships are your primary means of interstellar travel in No Man's Sky, and they come in a dazzling array of dess, classes, and functionalities. From nimble fighters to colossal freighters, understanding the different types of starships and how to acquire them is crucial for efficient exploration, combat, and trade. Each ship class (C, B, A, S) affects its base stats and upgrade potential.
Common Starship Types:
- Fighters: Desed for combat, these ships typically have high maneuverability and weapon damage. They often feature prominent wings and a more aggressive aesthetic.
- Explorers: Built for long-distance travel, Explorers boast the highest hyperdrive range and fuel efficiency. They are ideal for charting unknown territories.
- Haulers: These ships are characterized by their large cargo capacity, making them excellent for trading and resource gathering. They are generally slower and less maneuverable than other types.
- Interceptors: A newer class of ship, often found in pirate-controlled systems or associated with specific lore. They combine aspects of combat and exploration with unique dess.
- Shuttles: A balanced all-around ship, Shuttles offer moderate stats in combat, exploration, and cargo. They are often the most common type found early in the game.
- Solar Ships: These unique ships feature large solar sails that can be oriented towards the sun for propulsion and have a distinct aesthetic. They offer good maneuverability and hyperdrive range.
- Living Ships: Organic, biomechanical vessels that are acquired through a special questline. They have unique upgrade paths and abilities.
Acquiring New Starships:
- Purchasing from Space Stations: The most common method is to buy ships from the landing pads in space stations. The available ships and their classes are determined by the star system's economy and dominant faction.
- Finding Crashed Ships: You can find crashed starships on planet surfaces. These are often low-class but can be repaired and claimed for free. You can then either scrap them for parts or trade them in for a new ship.
- Trading Posts: Similar to space stations, trading posts on planets often have ships available for purchase.
- Outlaw Stations: These hidden stations offer a chance to find unique or higher-class ships, sometimes at a discount.
- Mission Rewards: Certain missions, particularly those involving pirate bounties or specific questlines, can reward you with a starship.
- Freighter Battles: Successfully defending a freighter from pirates can sometimes result in being offered the freighter itself or a smaller ship as a reward.
Trading In Ships:
When you purchase a new ship, your current ship is traded in. The trade-in value is a percentage of the new ship's cost, so it's always more economical to buy a new ship than to trade in your old one and then buy a replacement.
| Ship Type | Primary Role | Key Feature |
|---|---|---|
| Fighter | Combat | High damage, maneuverability. |
| Explorer | Exploration | Longest hyperdrive range. |
| Hauler | Cargo/Trading | Largest inventory space. |
| Interceptor | Combat/Exploration | Unique dess, often found in pirate systems. |
| Solar | Exploration/Unique | Solar sails, distinctive look. |
Prioritize acquiring ships that suit your playstyle. Upgrading your ship's class and installing technology modules will sificantly enhance its performance.
