Dealing with Aggressive Sentinels
Sentinels are robotic guardians that patrol planets, enforcing the laws of the universe. While they can be passive observers, they become aggressive when you interfere with the planet's flora, fauna, or resources. Dealing with aggressive Sentinels requires quick thinking, strategic evasion, and sometimes, direct confrontation.
When Sentinels become hostile, they will initially deploy small, hovering drones. These are relatively easy to dispatch with your Multi-Tool. However, if you continue to provoke them or engage in prolonged conflict, they will escalate their response. This escalation involves deploying larger, more powerful Sentinel units, including walkers and combat frigates in orbit.
Your first line of defense against aggressive Sentinels is evasion. If you're caught mining or harvesting, quickly stop and move away from the area. Use terrain features like caves, dense foliage, or large rock formations to break line of sight. Your ship can also be a temporary sanctuary; landing your ship and entering it will often cause pursuing Sentinels to lose track of you, though they may continue to patrol the area.
If evasion isn't an option, combat is necessary. Upgrade your Multi-Tool's weaponry, particularly the Boltcaster and Plasma Launcher, with powerful mods. Focus on targeting the drones first, as they can overwhelm you quickly. Sentinel walkers are heavily armored and possess powerful weaponry, so maintaining distance and utilizing cover is key. Aim for their weak points, often glowing joints or optical sensors.
To reduce Sentinel aggression, you can use specific technologies. The 'Cloaking Device' upgrade for your Exosuit can temporarily make you invisible to Sentinels, allowing you to escape or reposition. Additionally, certain ship upgrades might offer defensive capabilities against Sentinel frigates.
If you find yourself overwhelmed, your best bet is to flee. Sprint to your ship, take off, and warp to another system. The Sentinels' pursuit is usually limited to the planet's atmosphere. Once you've escaped, you can return later, and the Sentinels will have reset their alert status. Mastering the art of Sentinel evasion and combat is a vital skill for any explorer in No Man's Sky.
