Hunger & Thirst (Optional Survival Settings)
While No Man's Sky offers a core experience focused on exploration and survival, players seeking an additional layer of challenge can enable optional survival settings, including hunger and thirst mechanics. These mechanics add a constant need for sustenance, forcing players to actively manage their resource gathering and consumption to stay alive.
When hunger and thirst are enabled, your Exosuit will display meters indicating your current levels. Depleting these meters will lead to negative status effects, such as reduced stamina regeneration or eventual damage. To counteract this, you'll need to find and consume specific resources or craft food and water items.
Managing Hunger
- Food Sources: Various flora and fauna on planets can be harvested or consumed directly. Some plants provide immediate sustenance, while others might need to be refined or cooked.
- Crafting Food: With the right blueprints, you can craft more complex and nourishing food items using gathered ingredients. These often provide better hunger satisfaction and sometimes additional buffs.
- Creature Pellets: Feeding creatures can sometimes yield edible items or lead them to drop resources.
Managing Thirst
- Water Sources: Certain planets may have bodies of water that can be purified and consumed.
- Crafting Water: Similar to food, water can be crafted using specific ingredients, often found on planets with high humidity or ice.
- Condensation: Some technologies or base modules might allow for passive water generation.
Impact on Gameplay
Enabling hunger and thirst sificantly alters the gameplay loop. Exploration becomes more focused on finding immediate sustenance, and base building might incorporate farms or water extractors to ensure a steady supply. Combat and hazardous environments become even more perilous as you must also contend with your character's basic needs.
| Need | Resource/Item | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Hunger | Various Flora/Fauna | Planetary harvesting, crafting |
| Hunger | Cooked Meals | Crafting with ingredients |
| Thirst | Purified Water | Water bodies, crafting |
| Thirst | Hydration Packs | Crafting |
These optional settings transform No Man's Sky into a more demanding survival experience. If you enjoy resource management and a constant sense of urgency, enabling hunger and thirst can add a compelling new dimension to your adventures.
