Your First Ship & Spaceflight Basics
Upon awakening on your starting planet, your immediate priority in No Man's Sky Survival is to locate and repair your crashed starship. This vessel is your ticket off the hostile world and your gateway to the vast universe. The initial steps involve gathering essential resources like Carbon and Ferrite Dust to repair critical ship components. You'll need to scan your surroundings to identify these resource nodes. Once you've collected enough, interact with the damaged parts of your ship to initiate repairs. The first major component to fix is typically the Pulse Engine, which requires a specific amount of **Antimatter** and **Condensed Carbon**. Antimatter is crafted using **Carbon** and **Frost Crystal**, so keep an eye out for flora that yields these materials. After the Pulse Engine is functional, you'll need to repair the Launch Thrusters, which usually demand **Ferrite Dust** and **Dioxite**. Ferrite Dust is abundant and can be mined from rocks, while Dioxite is often found in frozen environments.
With your ship repaired, you can finally take to the skies. The controls for spaceflight are intuitive but require practice. The left analog stick (or WASD keys on PC) controls pitch and yaw, while the right analog stick (or mouse) controls roll and fine-tuning your direction. The Pulse Engine, once repaired, allows for rapid travel across planetary surfaces and within star systems. Activating it consumes **Antimatter** or **Antimatter Housing**, so managing your fuel is crucial. For interstellar travel, you'll need to engage your Hyperdrive. The Hyperdrive requires **Antimatter** to function, and its range is determined by installed upgrades. Early in the game, your Hyperdrive's range will be limited, necessitating careful planning of your jumps between star systems. Landing on planets is a straightforward process: descend towards the surface and engage your landing thrusters as you approach your desired spot. Be mindful of hazardous weather conditions and aggressive fauna when choosing your landing zone.
Navigating space involves understanding the galactic map. This map allows you to select star systems and plot courses for both Pulse Engine travel and Hyperdrive jumps. Different star systems are color-coded (red, green, blue) indicating the types of stars present and the potential for rare resources or specific technologies. Early on, you'll likely be guided by the main questline, which often directs you towards the nearest **Space Station** or a specific objective. Interacting with the **Mission Agent** on a Space Station is a vital early step, as it provides opportunities to earn Units and increase your standing with various guilds, which can unlock access to better ship upgrades and technologies. Remember to always keep a stock of essential repair materials and fuel to avoid being stranded.
