Environmental Interaction & Destructibility
The environments in Oni are more than just backdrops; they are integral parts of the combat and puzzle-solving experience. Many objects within the game world can be interacted with or even destroyed, offering strategic advantages or posing new threats. For instance, explosive barrels are a classic tool for dealing with groups of enemies. A well-placed shot can detonate them, causing sificant damage and clearing out a crowded area. Be mindful of their placement, as they can also harm Konoko if you're too close when they explode.
Cover is paramount, and while some cover points are solid, others are destructible. Wooden crates, flimsy barricades, and even some glass partitions can be shot through or shattered, compromising your cover and forcing you to find new positions. Conversely, you can use these destructible elements to your advantage. Shooting through a weakened wall to hit an enemy behind it, or shattering a glass window to create a new line of sight, are all viable tactics. Some levels feature environmental hazards that can be triggered. Look for opportunities to use these to your benefit, such as collapsing walkways or activating machinery that can impede enemy progress.
Beyond combat, environmental interaction plays a role in progression. You might need to shoot switches to open doors, activate platforms, or disable security systems. Pay attention to your surroundings and look for interactive elements. Sometimes, a seemingly innocuous object can be the key to advancing. The game encourages a dynamic approach to combat and exploration, rewarding players who actively engage with and manipulate their environment rather than just treating it as static scenery.
