Utilizing Cover Effectively
While Outriders encourages aggressive play and rewards players for staying in the fight through its unique health regeneration mechanics, the strategic use of cover remains an important aspect of combat. Cover is not primarily for passive healing, but rather for tactical repositioning, avoiding overwhelming enemy fire, and creating opportunities for your own attacks. Enemies in Outriders are relentless and will actively try to flank you or flush you out of cover. Therefore, simply hiding behind a wall is rarely a sustainable strategy. Instead, think of cover as a dynamic tool. Use it to break line of sight from concentrated enemy fire, allowing your health to regenerate through your Class's damage-based healing. For instance, if you're playing as a Pyromancer and have taken sificant damage, ducking behind a piece of rubble to allow your "Burn" effects to tick down enemy health and restore yours is a viable tactic. This allows you to survive engagements that would otherwise be fatal. Furthermore, cover can be used to set up ambushes or to safely deploy abilities. A Technomancer might use a low wall to deploy their "Cryo Turret" or "Assault Turret" without immediately drawing enemy attention, allowing the turret to gain initial aggro and deal damage while You prepares their next move. The key is to use cover intelligently, not as a crutch, but as a temporary respite or a strategic advantage.
The effectiveness of cover is also heavily influenced by the environment and the types of enemies you are facing. In open areas with limited natural cover, you may need to rely more on your mobility and abilities to survive. Conversely, in more enclosed spaces, like the ruins of a settlement or the interior of a derelict ship, cover can be abundant and highly effective. Always be aware of destructible cover. Some environmental elements can be shot through or destroyed entirely, leaving you exposed. Enemies will also attempt to use cover against you, so anticipating their movements and using area-of-effect abilities or flanking maneuvers to dislodge them is crucial. For example, if you see a group of Hollow Soldiers taking cover behind a barricade, a well-placed "Tremor" ability from a Devastator can knock them out of cover and leave them vulnerable. Similarly, a Trickster could use "Slow Trap" to create a zone of slowed enemies, allowing them to safely advance and engage those who are attempting to use cover. Remember that cover is not just about hiding; it's about controlling the flow of combat. Use it to dictate engagements, protect yourself during ability cooldowns, and set up devastating combos. By integrating cover into your aggressive playstyle, you'll sificantly enhance your survivability and combat effectiveness in Outriders.
