Ascending Autumn Mountain
Autumn Mountain marks a significant step up in environmental complexity and enemy challenge. This vibrant, foliage-rich area demands keen observation, precise platforming, and a strategic approach to combat. Your primary goal is to navigate its treacherous, winding paths, overcome various environmental hazards, and solve clever puzzles to reach the summit where the Earth Vellumental Temple awaits.
Navigating the Ascent: Paths & Puzzles
The mountain is designed with multiple layers and interconnected routes. Don't be afraid to backtrack or explore seemingly dead-end paths, as they often hide secrets.
- Winding Paths & Hidden Switches: Early on, you'll encounter paths blocked by large rocks. Look for red switches embedded in the ground or on nearby ledges. Hitting these with your hammer often triggers a mechanism that clears the path or reveals a new one. For example, after the first set of rolling boulders, a path to the left leads to a switch that opens a shortcut.
- Rolling Boulders: These are a recurring hazard. Observe their patterns carefully. Most can be avoided by simply running past them during their downtime or by ducking into small alcoves along the path. Some larger boulders require you to activate a switch to stop them permanently or divert their course. Pay attention to the ground for faint lines indicating boulder trajectories.
- Environmental Puzzles:
- Spinning Platforms: You'll encounter platforms that rotate when you hit a nearby target with your hammer. Time your jumps carefully to land on them as they align with your desired direction. Sometimes, you'll need to hit the target multiple times to get the platform into the correct position.
- Water Puzzles: Later in the ascent, you'll find sections with dried-up streams or empty basins. Look for a nearby spout or a cracked pipe that can be repaired with the 1,000-Fold Arms. Activating these will often fill the area with water, allowing you to float across or access new areas. For instance, there's a section where you need to fill a small pond to raise a wooden platform.
- Leaf Piles: Keep an eye out for suspicious piles of autumn leaves. Hammering these often reveals hidden blocks, coin caches, or even a trapped Toad.
Secrets & Collectibles
Autumn Mountain is a treasure trove of hidden items and Toads. Thorough exploration is highly rewarded.
- Hidden Blocks: These are often invisible until you jump or hammer the correct spot. Look for subtle visual cues like slight discolorations on the ground or walls, or follow the paths of other visible blocks. A good general rule is to hammer every suspicious-looking corner or empty space, especially near ledges or after clearing an enemy encounter.
- Hidden Pathways: Some areas have camouflaged paths or ledges that blend into the background. For example, after the first major boulder section, look for a narrow, almost invisible path leading down to the right, which contains a hidden block and a Toad.
- Rescued Toads: Toads are cleverly disguised throughout the environment.
- Folded Toads: Many are crumpled into various shapes, like a folded leaf, a mushroom, or even disguised as part of a rock formation. Hammer everything!
- Stuck Toads: Some are stuck in cracks, under rocks, or even hanging from trees. Use your hammer or the 1,000-Fold Arms to free them.
- Item Toads: Occasionally, a Toad will be disguised as an item, such as a coin or a heart.
Pro-Tip: The "Toad Radar" accessory (found later in the game, but useful on replays) can help pinpoint nearby Toads. For your first playthrough, rely on careful exploration and hammering everything that looks out of place.
Enemies of Autumn Mountain
The enemies here are more robust than those in the preceding areas. Prepare for tougher battles and utilize your ring-solving skills.
- Shy Guys: Still present, but often in larger groups or paired with other enemies.
- Goombas (Armored): Some Goombas here wear helmets, requiring two hammer hits to defeat or a well-placed jump attack.
- Spiny: These spiky foes cannot be jumped on without taking damage. Use your hammer or a well-timed Iron Boots attack.
- Paper Macho Goomba: This is your first encounter with a Paper Macho enemy.
- Description: A gigantic, un-foldable Goomba made of thick paper. It's too large for standard ring battles.
- Combat Strategy:
- Avoid its Attacks: The Paper Macho Goomba will charge at you or attempt to stomp. Dodge these attacks by running or using the action command to jump.
- Target Weak Points: Look for glowing red targets on its body. These are its weak points.
- Use 1,000-Fold Arms: When a weak point is exposed, quickly activate the 1,000-Fold Arms ability (by pressing X) and stretch to grab and tear off the target. You'll need to be relatively close to the target to successfully grab it.
- Repeat: Continue dodging and tearing off weak points until the Paper Macho Goomba is defeated. It may expose new weak points as you damage it.
- Reward: Defeating Paper Macho enemies typically yields a significant amount of coins and sometimes a valuable accessory or item.
