Boss: Crump

Lord Crump is the very first boss you'll encounter in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, appearing in the Prologue. Don't underestimate him just because he's early; he can still pose a challenge if you're not prepared. This guide will walk you through defeating him efficiently.

Recommended Setup

  • Mario's Level: You'll likely be Level 1 or 2. Focus on increasing HP or FP if you have the option before this fight.
  • Partners: Goombario is your only available partner at this point.
  • Badges: Any badges you've found up to this point will be equipped automatically. Don't worry too much about optimizing here, as your options are limited.
  • Items: Stock up on a few basic healing items if you can.
    • Mushroom: Restores 5 HP. You can find these in various blocks and enemy drops in Rogueport and the Rogueport Sewers.
    • Honey Syrup: Restores 5 FP. Also found in blocks and as drops.
Make sure you have at least 2-3 Mushrooms.

Crump's Stats and Attacks

Lord Crump has the following stats:

  • HP: 10
  • Attack: 1 (Standard Punch)
  • Defense: 0

His primary attack is a simple punch. He doesn't have any special abilities or status effects to worry about at this stage.

Battle Strategy

The key to defeating Crump is consistent damage output and proper Action Commands. Since this is an early fight, it's a good opportunity to practice your timing.

Phase 1: Standard Attacks

  1. Mario's Turn: Use your standard "Jump" or "Hammer" attack. Both deal 1 damage. Practice your Action Commands to deal extra damage. A successful Action Command with Jump will deal 2 damage, and with Hammer, it will deal 2 damage.
  2. Goombario's Turn: Have Goombario use his "Headbonk" attack. This also deals 1 damage. Again, practice the Action Command for potential extra damage.
  3. Defense: When Crump attacks, be ready to guard with Mario (press 'A' just before the attack hits) to reduce incoming damage. A successful guard will reduce his 1 damage attack to 0.
  4. Healing: If Mario's HP drops to 3 or below, use a Mushroom to heal. It's better to be safe than sorry, especially early in the game when you're still learning the ropes.

Action Command Practice

This fight is an excellent training ground for Action Commands. Mastering them will significantly reduce the difficulty of future encounters. For Mario's Jump, press 'A' just as you land on the enemy. For Mario's Hammer, hold 'A' until the star appears, then release. For Goombario's Headbonk, press 'A' just as he makes contact.

Quick Victory Tips

  • Focus Fire: Crump is your only target, so direct all attacks at him.
  • Prioritize Action Commands: Successfully executing Action Commands on every attack will cut down the number of turns significantly. If you hit all Action Commands, you can defeat Crump in as few as 3-4 turns.
  • Don't Waste FP: At this stage, your FP is limited, and Crump's HP is low. Stick to basic attacks. Special moves like Power Jump or Power Smash aren't necessary and will drain your FP quickly.

Once Crump's HP reaches 0, he will be defeated, and you can proceed with the story!
