Boss: Rawk Hawk
Rawk Hawk is the reigning champion of the Glitz Pit and your final opponent in Chapter 3. This high-flying boss can be a tough challenge if you're not prepared, but with the right strategy, you'll be taking home that championship belt in no time!
Recommended Setup
- Mario's Level: Aim for at least level 15.
- Partners: Koops or Yoshi are excellent choices for this fight. Koops' Shell Toss can hit Rawk Hawk even when he's airborne, and Yoshi's Stampede is great for consistent damage.
- Badges:
- Power Plus/All or Nothing: To maximize your damage output.
- Defense Plus: To mitigate Rawk Hawk's strong attacks.
- HP Plus/FP Plus: If you feel your stats are lacking.
- Quick Change: Allows you to swap partners without losing a turn, which can be useful for adapting to Rawk Hawk's phases.
- Sleep Stomp/Soft Stomp: While not essential, these can occasionally stun Rawk Hawk.
- Items:
- Life Shrooms: Always a good idea for boss fights.
- Super Shrooms/Ultra Shrooms: For quick HP recovery.
- Maple Syrup/Jelly Ultra: To restore FP for special moves.
- Repel Cape: Can be useful for dodging a powerful attack if you're in a pinch.
Battle Strategy
Phase 1: Grounded Attacks
Rawk Hawk starts the battle on the ground, primarily using physical attacks. He has a standard punch attack and a slightly stronger body slam. Both can be guarded against with a well-timed A-button press.
- Mario's Actions: Focus on using Jump attacks (Power Jump, Multibounce if you have it) or Hammer attacks (Power Smash).
- Partner's Actions:
- Koops: Use Shell Toss for consistent damage.
- Yoshi: Use Gulp or Stampede. Stampede is particularly effective if you have multiple Power Plus badges equipped.
- General Tips: Keep your HP above 10-15 to avoid being KO'd by a critical hit. Use Sweet Treat (Star Power) if you need minor healing for both Mario and your partner.
Phase 2: Airborne Attacks
After taking some damage, Rawk Hawk will frequently jump into the air. While airborne, he's immune to Mario's Hammer attacks and most ground-based partner attacks (like Goombella's Headbonk). He'll perform a diving attack from above.
- Mario's Actions: Continue using Jump attacks.
- Partner's Actions: This is where partner choice becomes crucial.
- Koops: His Shell Toss will still hit Rawk Hawk while he's in the air, making him an excellent choice for consistent damage throughout the fight.
- Yoshi: Yoshi's Gulp attack can also hit airborne enemies. Stampede is less effective here unless Rawk Hawk happens to land on the same turn.
- Flurrie: If you brought Flurrie, her Gale Force can blow Rawk Hawk back to the ground, but it's not always reliable and uses FP.
- Guarding: His diving attack can be guarded, but the timing is slightly different from his ground attacks. Practice the timing to minimize damage.
Phase 3: Enraged Rawk Hawk
When Rawk Hawk's HP is low (roughly 10-15 HP remaining), he'll become enraged, indicated by a red aura. His attacks will become stronger and he might attack twice in a single turn.
- Mario's Actions: This is the time to unleash your strongest attacks. Use Superguard if you're confident in your timing to completely negate damage.
- Partner's Actions: Continue with your chosen partner's best attacks.
- Star Power: If you have enough Star Power, use Earth Tremor or Art Attack for a significant burst of damage to finish him off quickly.
- Healing: Don't hesitate to use your healing items if your HP drops too low. A Life Shroom can save you from a game over.
Post-Battle Rewards
Once Rawk Hawk is defeated, you'll earn a significant amount of Star Points and, more importantly, the Championship Belt! This marks the completion of Chapter 3 and allows you to progress further in your quest.
