Star Powers & Star Spirits
Star Powers are invaluable combat abilities granted to Mario by the benevolent Star Spirits you rescue throughout your adventure. These powers consume Star Power, represented by the Star Power Gauge at the top of your battle screen. Filling this gauge is crucial for unleashing devastating attacks or providing vital support. You gain Star Power by successfully executing "Stylish Moves" during battle (pressing 'A' at the right moment during an attack or defense), by using specific items, or by collecting the occasional Star Power-up dropped by enemies.
Each Star Spirit you rescue bestows a unique Star Power, expanding your tactical options significantly. Mastering their use is key to overcoming the tougher challenges in the game, especially against bosses and in the Pit of 100 Trials.
Star Spirit Acquisition & Power Breakdown
Here's a detailed guide to each Star Spirit, where to find them, and the Star Power they grant:
1. Eldstar (Earth Tremor)
- Location: Hooktail Castle, Chapter 1. Eldstar is the first Star Spirit you rescue after defeating Hooktail.
- Star Power: Earth Tremor (1 Star Power)
- Effect: Deals 2 damage to all ground-based enemies. This is an excellent early-game crowd control option, especially against multiple weaker foes like Goombas, Koopas, and Paratroopas.
- Strategy: Use Earth Tremor when facing groups of enemies with low HP to clear them out quickly, conserving your FP for stronger single-target attacks. It's particularly effective against enemies that are difficult to hit with ground attacks due to their positioning, as it bypasses their defenses.
2. Mamar (Sweet Treat)
- Location: The Great Boggly Tree, Chapter 2. Mamar is freed after you defeat the monstrous Gloomtail.
- Star Power: Sweet Treat (2 Star Power)
- Effect: Restores 5 HP and 5 FP to Mario and his partner.
- Strategy: Sweet Treat is a lifesaver! Use it when both Mario and your partner are low on HP or when you need to replenish FP for powerful special moves. It's incredibly efficient compared to using individual healing items, saving you inventory space and coins. Prioritize using it during longer battles or when you anticipate taking heavy damage in the next few turns.
3. Skolar (Power Lift)
- Location: Glitzville, Chapter 3. Skolar is rescued after you triumph over the reigning champion, Rawk Hawk, in the Glitz Pit.
- Star Power: Power Lift (3 Star Power)
- Effect: Increases Mario's and his partner's Attack and Defense by 1 for a few turns.
- Strategy: Power Lift is a fantastic buff for boss battles and tough encounters. Activate it at the beginning of a challenging fight to maximize your damage output and reduce incoming damage. The increased defense is especially useful against enemies with high attack power. Combine it with badges like Power Plus or Defend Plus for even greater effect.
4. Muskular (Art Attack)
- Location: Creepy Steeple, Chapter 4. Muskular is found after you defeat the menacing Doopliss.
- Star Power: Art Attack (4 Star Power)
- Effect: Allows you to draw a circle on the screen to damage enemies within it. The damage scales with the size and completeness of your circle, up to 6 damage per enemy.
- Strategy: Art Attack is a high-risk, high-reward power. Practice drawing perfect circles quickly to maximize its damage potential. It's excellent for clearing out groups of enemies, especially those with higher HP than Earth Tremor can handle. Aim for a large, unbroken circle that encompasses as many enemies as possible. This power can be tricky to master, but its potential damage output is immense.
5. Klevar (Star Storm)
- Location: Pirate's Grotto, Chapter 5. Klevar is rescued after you defeat the formidable Cortez.
- Star Power: Star Storm (5 Star Power)
- Effect: Deals 7 damage to all enemies.
- Strategy: Star Storm is your ultimate offensive Star Power for clearing the field. It's a guaranteed 7 damage to every enemy, regardless of their position or defense. Use it when you're overwhelmed by multiple strong enemies or to finish off a boss that's close to defeat. While expensive, its reliability and power make it worth saving Star Power for.
6. Kalmar (Sweet Feast)
- Location: Poshley Heights, Chapter 6. Kalmar is found after you defeat the fearsome Grubba.
- Star Power: Sweet Feast (3 Star Power)
- Effect: Restores 10 HP and 10 FP to Mario and his partner.
- Strategy: An upgraded version of Sweet Treat, Sweet Feast is even more efficient for recovery. Use it when your resources are severely depleted. It's a crucial power for surviving prolonged battles and the later stages of the Pit of 100 Trials. The increased recovery for only 1 more Star Power than Sweet Treat makes it incredibly valuable.
7. Goombario (Supernova)
- Location: Palace of Shadow, Chapter 8. Goombario is the final Star Spirit, rescued after you defeat the Shadow Queen.
- Star Power: Supernova (6 Star Power)
- Effect: Deals 15 damage to all enemies.
- Strategy: Supernova is the most powerful offensive Star Power in the game. It's a battle-ending move for most regular encounters and can significantly chip away at boss HP. Save it for the toughest fights or when you need to deliver a decisive blow. The high Star Power cost means you'll need to be diligent with Stylish Moves to build up to it, but the payoff is immense.
Remember to experiment with each Star Power to understand their nuances and integrate them effectively into your combat strategies. The right Star Power at the right time can turn the tide of any battle!
