Chapter 4: The Mystery of Fahr Outpost
Welcome to Chapter 4! This chapter takes you to the chilling reaches of Fahr Outpost, a land of ice and mystery. Be prepared for some frosty encounters and clever puzzles as you unravel the secrets of the fourth Crystal Star.
Reaching Fahr Outpost
Your journey to Fahr Outpost begins after receiving the next clue from the Great Tree. Head back to Rogueport and then make your way to the Rogueport Sewers. You'll need to use your Paper Mode ability to slip through a crack in the wall located in the western part of the sewers, near the pipe that leads to Hooktail Castle. This path will lead you to a new area: the Fahr Outpost Trail.
- Rogueport Sewers: From the main sewer hub, go left. Look for a narrow crack in the wall on the northern side of the screen. Use Paper Mode to pass through.
- Fahr Outpost Trail: This snowy path is straightforward but introduces new enemies like Frost Piranhas and Ice Puffs. Be mindful of their ice attacks. Continue following the path until you reach the actual Fahr Outpost.
Exploring Fahr Outpost
Fahr Outpost is a small, isolated village inhabited by hardy residents. Your primary goal here is to find the location of the next Crystal Star. Talk to the villagers to gather information.
- Mayor's House: Upon entering Fahr Outpost, head to the large igloo in the center of town. This is the Mayor's house. Speak with the Mayor to learn about the legend of the Star Stone and the location of the Star Shrine. He'll tell you that the Star Stone is located in the Star Shrine, which is further north.
- General Store: Before venturing further, consider stocking up on items. The General Store sells useful items like Fire Flower and Ice Storm, which can be very effective against the local enemies.
- Inn: Rest up at the Inn if needed.
The Star Shrine's Entrance
The Mayor mentions that the Star Shrine is to the north, but the path is blocked by a massive, seemingly impenetrable ice wall. To proceed, you'll need to find a way to break through it.
- The Cannon: The key to breaking the ice wall lies with the large cannon located on the eastern side of Fahr Outpost. However, the cannon is currently inoperable.
- Finding the Cannonball: Talk to the Bob-ombs around the cannon. They'll tell you they need a cannonball. One of the Bob-ombs, named Bob-ombard, will offer to help if you can find him a suitable cannonball.
- The Snowman's Head: Head to the western side of Fahr Outpost. You'll notice a large snowman. Use your partner's abilities (Koops' Shell Toss or Flurrie's Gale Force) to knock off the snowman's head. This head is the perfect size for the cannon!
- Loading the Cannon: Bring the snowman's head back to Bob-ombard at the cannon. He will load it, but the cannon still won't fire.
- The Fuse: Speak to the other Bob-ombs. They'll inform you that the cannon needs a fuse. One of the Bob-ombs, Bombette, will offer to act as the fuse.
- Firing the Cannon: With Bombette in place, the cannon is ready! Interact with the cannon to fire it. The snowman's head will blast through the ice wall, clearing the path to the Star Shrine.
Inside the Star Shrine
The Star Shrine is a frosty dungeon filled with puzzles and enemies. Be prepared for battles against Ice Puffs, Frost Piranhas, and Swoopers.
- First Room: The initial room has a few enemies. Clear them out and proceed north.
- Ice Block Puzzle: You'll encounter a room with several ice blocks. You need to push these blocks into specific positions to create a path.
- Push the first block right, then up.
- Push the second block left, then up.
- Push the third block right, then up.
- Push the fourth block left, then up.
- Hidden Block: In the next area, look for a hidden block containing a Super Shroom above a small ledge.
- Switch Puzzle: You'll come to a room with a large block and a switch. Hit the switch to move the block. You'll need to time your movements carefully to get across. Use Koops' Shell Toss to hit the switch from a distance, then quickly run across before the block returns.
- Crystal Star Chamber: Continue through the shrine, defeating enemies as you go. Eventually, you'll reach a large chamber where the fourth Crystal Star, the Diamond Star, awaits.
Boss Battle: The Crystal King
As you approach the Diamond Star, the Crystal King will appear, ready to defend it. This boss battle requires a strategic approach.
- Crystal King's Abilities: The Crystal King can attack with ice magic, summon Crystal Bits (small crystal enemies that can heal him), and occasionally turn invisible.
- Strategy:
- Focus on Crystal Bits: When the Crystal King summons Crystal Bits, prioritize defeating them immediately. They can heal the King for a significant amount of HP, prolonging the battle. Area-of-effect attacks like Power Smash (Mario) or Shell Shot (Koops) are excellent for this.
- Invisible Phase: When the Crystal King turns invisible, he becomes immune to physical attacks. Use special moves or items that don't rely on direct contact, or simply defend until he reappears. Flurrie's Gale Force can sometimes reveal him.
- Elemental Weakness: The Crystal King is an ice-based enemy, so fire attacks are highly effective. Use Fire Flowers if you have them, or Mario's Fire Drive special move.
- Partner Choice: Goombella is useful for her Tattle ability to check HP and weaknesses. Koops can hit Crystal Bits from the front. Flurrie's Gale Force can clear the field of Crystal Bits and potentially reveal the King.
- Badges: Equip badges that boost attack power (e.g., Power Plus) or provide defensive bonuses. HP Plus and FP Plus are always good choices.
- Victory: Once the Crystal King is defeated, you will claim the Diamond Star!
Returning to Rogueport
With the Diamond Star in hand, you'll automatically be transported back to Fahr Outpost. From there, retrace your steps through the Fahr Outpost Trail and the Rogueport Sewers to return to Professor Frankly in Rogueport. He will update your map and tell you about the next Crystal Star's location, setting the stage for Chapter 5!
