Character Creation
Character creation in Party Club is deeply influenced by the historical context of West Warwick, a town shaped by its industrial past and subsequent economic struggles. The rise and fall of its textile mills and various revitalization attempts provide a rich backdrop for developing your character's backstory and motivations.
West Warwick's history is marked by its textile mills, which prospered through the 1940s and into the ’50s, producing Fruit of the Loom products. Weekdays saw a diverse workforce laboring in three shifts, with their overtime checks spent in Arctic’s bustling retail center on weekends.
However, the late ’50s and ’60s brought decline as mills shut down, moving south for cheaper labor. New shopping centers in neighboring Warwick, coupled with the completion of Interstate Highway 95 in 1958, drew away commerce. By 2003, eastern Warwick became Rhode Island's retail hub, with a tax base almost five times that of West Warwick.
Unsuccessful attempts to revitalize West Warwick included:
- A proposal for a tax-free shopping zone (dead on arrival in the legislature).
- A partnership with Harrah’s to develop a Narragansett Indian casino (defeated in multiple referenda).
- Plans for a “destination-resort indoor water park,” which slowed in the state legislature due to rumors of an FBI sting operation.
Economic downturns often coincided with fires and arson, from the destruction of the Roger Williams mill in 1821 to the Crompton Mills fire in 1992. Following one such fire, a West Warwick neighborhood was renamed Phenix.
