Quest: The Eternal Nightmare
Welcome, Exile, to one of Path of Exile 2's most pivotal and challenging early-game encounters: The Eternal Nightmare. This quest marks a significant turning point in your journey through the ravaged lands of Wraeclast, culminating in a confrontation with a truly formidable foe. Prepare yourself, for the horrors that await within the Sunken City will test your build, your reflexes, and your resolve.
Quest Giver and Location
This quest is initiated by Commander Valerius in the Encampment of the Azure Coast, following your successful navigation of the treacherous Whispering Caverns. Valerius, burdened by the encroaching darkness, will implore you to investigate the ancient ruins submerged beneath the waves, believing a source of the spreading corruption lies dormant within.
Walkthrough: Unveiling the Nightmare
- Journey to the Sunken City: From the Azure Coast Encampment, head south-east along the coastline until you discover the entrance to the Sunken City. Be wary of the aquatic horrors and reanimated constructs that patrol the path.
- Navigate the Drowned Passages: The Sunken City is a labyrinth of waterlogged corridors and crumbling structures. You'll encounter new enemy types here, including:
- Drowned Zealots: Fast-moving melee attackers with corrosive attacks.
- Abyssal Lurkers: Ambush predators that emerge from the water, often applying chilling effects.
- Ancient Golems: Slow but heavily armored constructs, often immune to elemental damage of a specific type.
- Activate the Ancient Conduits: Your primary objective within the Sunken City is to locate and activate three Ancient Conduits. These conduits are often guarded by mini-boss encounters, such as an Abyssal Guardian (a larger, more powerful Abyssal Lurker) or a Corrupted Sentinel (a heavily armored Ancient Golem with an aura that slows your movement). Activating each conduit will drain a portion of the water from the central chamber, revealing the path to the boss.
- Reach the Heart of the Sunken City: Once all three conduits are active, the central chamber will be accessible. Prepare yourself before entering, as this is where you will face the source of the nightmare.
Boss Encounter: The Abyssal Leviathan
The true terror of the Sunken City is the Abyssal Leviathan, a colossal, ancient entity corrupted by the void. This multi-phase boss demands precision, awareness, and a well-tuned build.
Phase 1: Submerged Fury
The Leviathan begins partially submerged, primarily using ranged and area-of-effect attacks.
- Torrential Barrage: The Leviathan fires a spread of high-damage water projectiles. These can be dodged by moving perpendicular to the Leviathan's gaze.
- Crushing Wave: It charges a large AoE attack that sweeps across a section of the arena. A clear indicator (glowing lines on the ground) will precede this. Move out of the marked area immediately.
- Summon Abyssal Minions: Periodically, the Leviathan will summon Drowned Zealots and Abyssal Lurkers to distract you. Prioritize clearing these to avoid being overwhelmed.
Strategy: Focus on consistent damage while constantly repositioning to avoid its predictable attacks. Lightning and Cold damage are moderately effective in this phase, but Physical damage remains a strong choice.
Phase 2: Awakened Terror
Upon reaching approximately 60% health, the Leviathan fully emerges, becoming more mobile and introducing devastating melee attacks.
- Tail Sweep: A wide, fast melee attack that covers a large arc behind and to its sides. Stay in front or directly under its head if possible.
- Void Breath: The Leviathan unleashes a cone of void energy that applies a stacking debuff, reducing your resistances. This is highly dangerous and must be dodged.
- Ground Slam & Vortex: It slams its massive head into the ground, creating a small AoE impact, then pulls players towards it with a powerful vacuum effect, followed by another slam. Use movement skills to escape the pull and the subsequent slam.
- Corrupted Geysers: The arena floor will periodically erupt with corrupted geysers, dealing chaos damage. These locations are telegraphed by bubbling water.
Strategy: This phase is significantly more challenging. Maintain high mobility. Focus on hitting its head or exposed underbelly when it’s not attacking. Chaos Resistance becomes crucial here due to Void Breath and Corrupted Geysers. Consider using a utility flask with "Immunity to Corrupted Blood" if you find yourself struggling with stacking debuffs.
Recommended Loadouts and Tips
- Resistances: Aim for capped Lightning and Cold Resistance for Phase 1, and prioritize Chaos Resistance for Phase 2. Physical damage reduction is always beneficial.
- Movement Skills: A reliable movement skill (e.g., Dash, Flame Dash, Leap Slam) is absolutely essential for dodging the Leviathan's wide-reaching attacks and escaping its vortex.
- Life Flasks: Bring several instant-recovery or hybrid flasks. Consider one with "Bleed Removal" or "Curse Removal" if you're struggling with specific debuffs from the minions.
- Damage Type: Physical damage builds generally perform well. Elemental builds should focus on Lightning or Cold damage, but be prepared for potential resistances. Damage over time (DoT) builds can be effective if you can maintain uptime.
- Minion Management: If you're a minion build, ensure your minions can withstand the AoE attacks and that you can quickly resummon them if they fall.
- Common Pitfalls:
- Ignoring Minions: Letting too many Drowned Zealots or Abyssal Lurkers accumulate will quickly overwhelm you.
- Standing in Telegraphed AoEs: The Leviathan's attacks are often telegraphed; learn these patterns and react quickly.
- Lack of Chaos Resistance: Phase 2 can quickly become lethal without adequate Chaos Resistance.
