Ranger Class Overview
The Ranger in Path of Exile 2 is a master of ranged combat, agility, and precision. Specializing in bows, crossbows, and swift movement, Rangers excel at dealing damage from a distance while evading enemy attacks. This class is ideal for players who enjoy high-mobility gameplay, critical strikes, and strategic positioning. While naturally squishier than other classes, a well-played Ranger can control the battlefield and eliminate threats before they become a danger.
Starting Your Ranger Journey
Upon character creation, you'll begin in the perilous The Coast zone. Your initial gear will be a basic Crude Bow and a quiver. Your first active skill gem, Puncture, will be granted early in Act 1. This skill is excellent for applying a strong bleed effect to single targets, making it valuable for early boss encounters.
Early Game Skill Progression (Act 1-3)
Focus on acquiring and linking support gems to enhance your primary attack skills. Look for vendors like Nessa in Lioneye's Watch for early gem purchases.
- Level 1-10:
- Primary Skill: Puncture (single target) and Rain of Arrows (AoE). You'll receive Rain of Arrows after completing the quest "Mercy Mission" from Tarkleigh.
- Support Gems: Link Chance to Bleed Support to Puncture for increased damage over time. For Rain of Arrows, Added Cold Damage Support or Lesser Multiple Projectiles Support (if available) are strong choices.
- Utility: Dash for mobility, obtained from Nessa after "Breaking Some Eggs".
- Level 10-20:
- New Skills: Consider Split Arrow for wider area clear, or Caustic Arrow for poison-based damage over time, especially effective against groups.
- Support Gems: Look for Pierce Support for Split Arrow, or Void Manipulation Support for Caustic Arrow.
- Auras/Heralds: Precision (for critical strike chance) and Herald of Ice (for clear and cold damage) are excellent early choices.
Essential Gear and Crafting
Prioritize gear with increased Dexterity, Life, and elemental resistances. Bows with high physical damage or added elemental damage are crucial. Keep an eye out for:
- Bows: Upgrade your bow frequently. Early on, a Short Bow or Long Bow with good implicit modifiers (e.g., increased critical strike chance) are strong. Later, aim for a Thicket Bow or Spine Bow.
- Quivers: Look for quivers that grant increased attack speed, critical strike chance, or added damage. The Sharktooth Quiver is a solid early option.
- Armour: Focus on Evasion Rating gear. A Leather Armour or Padded Vest with good life and resistance rolls will serve you well.
- Jewellery: Rings and Amulets should prioritize Life, resistances, and flat added physical or elemental damage.
Crafting Tip: Use Orbs of Transmutation and Orbs of Alteration on white bows to roll for "increased physical damage" or "added X-Y elemental damage" modifiers. This is a cost-effective way to upgrade your weapon in the early game.
Passive Skill Tree Focus
The Ranger starts in the top-left section of the passive skill tree, offering immediate access to nodes that enhance bow damage, attack speed, critical strike chance, and evasion. Prioritize the following:
- Life and Evasion: Always pick up nearby Life nodes and increased Evasion Rating.
- Bow Damage & Attack Speed: Head towards clusters like "Finesse" for attack speed and "Projectile Damage" for overall damage.
- Critical Strike: Invest in "Acuity" and other critical strike chance/multiplier nodes as your gear improves.
- Movement Speed: Small nodes offering movement speed are highly beneficial for a Ranger's playstyle.
Ascendancy Class: Upon completing the Labyrinth in Act 3, you'll choose one of the Ranger's three Ascendancy classes: Deadeye (pure projectile offense), Pathfinder (flask utility and elemental damage), or Raider (frenzy charges, speed, and elemental ailment immunity). Your choice will heavily influence your build's direction.
Combat Strategies
- Maintain Distance: Always keep enemies at arm's length. Use Dash or other movement skills to reposition.
- Kiting: Shoot, move, shoot. This technique is vital for surviving encounters with tough enemies.
- Target Priority: Focus down dangerous ranged enemies or spellcasters first, as they can quickly deplete your life from a distance.
- Flask Management: Keep your Life Flasks topped up and use Quicksilver Flasks for speedy traversal and evasion.
By following these steps, your Ranger will be well-equipped to navigate the treacherous world of Path of Exile 2, delivering precise and deadly attacks from the shadows.
