Beginner Guide
Welcome, Exile, to the treacherous yet rewarding world of Path of Exile 2! This comprehensive guide will equip you with the foundational knowledge and actionable steps to navigate your initial hours in Wraeclast. Forget complex builds for now; our focus is on survival, understanding core mechanics, and progressing through the early acts.
Character Creation & Initial Choices
Your journey begins with selecting your first character. While all classes can eventually specialize into diverse playstyles, your initial choice influences your starting location and early skill gems. For new players, we recommend:
- Warrior: Excellent for melee combat, high survivability. Starts with skills like Cleave and Molten Strike.
- Huntress: Ranged combat specialist, good for keeping distance. Begins with Rain of Arrows and Puncture.
- Sorceress: Elemental spellcaster, powerful area-of-effect. Starts with Fireball and Frostbolt.
Don't fret too much over this decision; the beauty of Path of Exile 2 lies in its flexibility. You can respec later, though it can be costly.
The First Steps: Act I Survival
Upon awakening on the shores of Wraeclast, your immediate goals are to acquire essential gear, understand skill gems, and complete initial quests.
1. The Coast & Lioneye's Watch
- Gather Your First Weapon: Immediately after character creation, you'll find a basic weapon on the ground near your starting point (e.g., a Driftwood Club for Warrior, a Crude Bow for Huntress, a Driftwood Wand for Sorceress). Equip it!
- First Skill Gem: Shortly after, you'll encounter your first enemy. Defeat it to receive your first active skill gem (e.g., Cleave, Rain of Arrows, Fireball). Open your inventory (default 'I') and right-click the gem to socket it into an item with a matching colored socket.
- Reach Lioneye's Watch: Follow the path. You'll soon arrive at Lioneye's Watch, your first safe town. Here, you'll meet important NPCs.
- Talk to Tarkleigh: He's usually near the entrance. He'll give you your first quest: "Enemy at the Gate."
2. The Mud Flats & The Submerged Passage
- "Enemy at the Gate" Quest: Head out of Lioneye's Watch into The Mud Flats. Your objective is to find and defeat the monster, Hailrake. Hailrake is typically found in a small cave or alcove within the Mud Flats.
- Skill Gem Reward: Upon defeating Hailrake and returning to Tarkleigh, you'll be offered a choice of support gems. For melee, consider Melee Physical Damage Support. For ranged, Added Cold Damage Support or Lesser Multiple Projectiles Support. For spells, Added Lightning Damage Support or Faster Casting Support. Socket these into an item linked to your main attack skill.
- "The Dweller in the Deep" Quest: This quest leads you through The Submerged Passage. Your goal is to find and defeat The Dweller. This boss is located at the end of the flooded cave system. Be prepared for a slightly tougher fight.
- Flask Upgrade: After defeating The Dweller, you'll often find a superior utility flask or a rare item. Return to Lioneye's Watch.
3. The Fetid Pool & The Cavern of Wrath
- "The Way Forward" Quest: Speak with Bestel in Lioneye's Watch. He will direct you to The Fetid Pool. Here, you'll need to clear out a specific number of corrupted monsters.
- Passive Skill Point: Completing "The Way Forward" often grants a passive skill point, crucial for developing your character.
- "Mercy Mission" Quest: Talk to Nessa. She'll ask you to retrieve a unique item, Medicine Chest, from The Cavern of Wrath. This area is teeming with fire-based enemies. Be wary of their projectiles.
- Flask Charges: The Medicine Chest quest reward often includes an additional flask charge or a new type of flask (e.g., a Mana Flask).
Essential Early Game Tips
- Pick Up Everything (Initially): In the very early game, pick up all white, blue, and yellow items. Sell them to vendors for currency. You'll need Scrolls of Wisdom to identify rare items and Scrolls of Portal to create town portals.
- Identify Rare Items: Always identify rare (yellow) items. They can have powerful modifiers that significantly boost your character.
- Check Vendor Inventories: Vendors in town (like Nessa and Tarkleigh) refresh their stock periodically. They often sell useful skill gems, linked items (items with connected sockets), and magic (blue) items with good stats. Look for items with linked sockets of the colors you need for your main skill and its supports.
- Flask Management: Your Life and Mana Flasks are your lifeline. Keep them topped up by killing enemies. Don't be afraid to use them! Upgrade them when you find better versions.
- Socket Colors & Links: Pay close attention to the colors of sockets on your gear (Red for Strength, Green for Dexterity, Blue for Intelligence) and whether they are linked. Linked sockets allow support gems to modify active skill gems. Aim for a 3-link for your main attack/spell as soon as possible.
- Passive Skill Tree: Spend your passive skill points wisely. Focus on nodes that increase your damage, life, and resistance. Don't spread your points too thin. For your first character, it's often best to follow a simple path towards a specific damage type or weapon type.
- Resistances are Key: As you progress, elemental resistances (Fire, Cold, Lightning) become incredibly important. Aim to cap them at 75% as soon as possible, especially before entering Act II. Look for gear with resistance modifiers.
- Don't Hoard Orbs: Early currency items like Orbs of Transmutation, Orbs of Alteration, and Orbs of Augmentation are meant to be used. Use them to craft better magic items or to modify your gear.
- Stay Overleveled (Slightly): If you find yourself struggling, take a moment to clear out an area fully or revisit a previous zone to gain a few extra levels. This can make a significant difference.
By following these steps and tips, you'll build a strong foundation for your journey through Path of Exile 2. Remember, experimentation is part of the fun, but a solid start makes all the difference!
