Character Customization & Appearance

Path of Exile 2 offers a robust suite of options for personalizing your Exile, allowing you to craft a unique identity that stands out in Wraeclast. Beyond the initial character creation, continuous customization is available through various in-game systems.

Initial Character Creation: Forging Your Legend

Upon starting a new character, you'll be presented with the foundational customization choices. These initial decisions are permanent, so choose wisely!

  • Class Selection: Your choice of one of the 12 distinct classes (e.g., Warrior, Huntress, Sorceress) dictates your base appearance, starting gear, and initial skill tree access. While some aesthetic elements are tied to class, many can be overridden later.
  • Gender: Each class offers both male and female variants, each with unique base models and animations.
  • Facial Features: A detailed slider system allows for adjustment of:
    • Face Shape: Broaden or narrow the jawline, adjust cheekbones.
    • Eyes: Modify eye shape, size, and color. Consider the impact of different hues like "Azure Gaze" or "Crimson Flare" on your character's overall demeanor.
    • Nose: Adjust bridge height, tip shape, and nostril size.
    • Mouth: Modify lip thickness, mouth width, and even tooth visibility.
    • Hair: Choose from a wide array of hairstyles, from rugged "Wasteland Braids" to elegant "Arcane Curls." Hair color is also fully customizable with a comprehensive palette.
    • Facial Hair (Male Characters): Options range from subtle stubble to elaborate beards like the "Marauder's Mane" or the "Templar's Trim."
  • Skin Tone: A spectrum of skin tones is available to further personalize your character's ethnicity and background.
  • Body Type: While not as granular as facial features, you can often choose between a few pre-set body types (e.g., muscular, lithe, average) that subtly alter your character's physique within their chosen class.

Transfiguration: The Art of Illusion

Once you've entered Wraeclast, the primary method for altering your character's appearance beyond their base model is through the Transfiguration system. This system allows you to apply the cosmetic appearance of one item onto another, without altering the stats or properties of the equipped item.

  1. Acquiring Transfiguration Scrolls: These essential items are found as rare drops from high-tier enemies in areas like the Sunken City or can be purchased from certain vendors, such as Kirac in your Hideout, for a modest sum of Orbs of Alchemy.
  2. Identifying Cosmetic Items: Any piece of armor, weapon, or shield can serve as a cosmetic source. Keep an eye out for aesthetically pleasing unique items or even common gear with desirable models. For instance, the "Lioneye's Remorse" shield has a distinctive lion's head motif that many players enjoy applying.
  3. Applying Transfiguration:
    • Open your inventory (default key: 'I').
    • Right-click on a Transfiguration Scroll.
    • Left-click on the equipped item whose appearance you wish to change (the "target" item).
    • A new window will appear, prompting you to select the cosmetic source item from your inventory. This item will be consumed in the process, so ensure it's one you're willing to part with.
    • Confirm your selection. The target item will now display the appearance of the consumed item.
  4. Removing Transfiguration: If you wish to revert an item to its original appearance, you'll need a Reversion Orb. These are rarer than Transfiguration Scrolls and are typically found in end-game content or purchased from specialized vendors. Right-click the Reversion Orb, then left-click the transfigured item.

Microtransactions: Premium Aesthetics

For those seeking even more elaborate and unique visual flair, Path of Exile 2 offers a wide range of cosmetic microtransactions. These items are purchased with real money through the in-game store and provide purely aesthetic enhancements.

  • Armour Sets: Complete sets that overhaul your character's entire look, such as the "Abyssal Lich Armour Set" or the "Celestial Stalker Armour Set."
  • Weapon Skins: Change the appearance of your weapons, from glowing swords to spectral bows. The "Infernal Blade Skin" is a popular choice for melee builds.
  • Skill Effects: Alter the visual effects of your active skills. Transform your "Fireball" into a "Volcanic Orb" or your "Lightning Strike" into a "Stormcaller's Fury."
  • Pets: Non-combat companions that follow your character, offering no gameplay advantage but adding a touch of personality. Examples include the "Shadow Fox Pet" or the "Grave Golem Pet."
  • Hideout Decorations: Customize your personal Hideout with unique furniture, statues, and environmental effects.
  • Portals: Change the visual effect of your town portals, offering a more thematic return to safety.

Microtransactions are account-bound and can be applied to any character on your account. They can be accessed and managed through the "Cosmetics" tab in your inventory or by visiting the in-game store.

Unique Item Visuals

Many unique items in Path of Exile 2 possess their own distinct 3D models and visual effects. Equipping these items will automatically display their unique appearance, overriding any applied Transfiguration. If you wish to retain a specific transfigured look while benefiting from a unique item's stats, you will need to apply Transfiguration to the unique item itself using another cosmetic source.
