Gem Vendors & Acquisition

Acquiring the right Skill Gems and Support Gems is paramount to building a powerful character in Path of Exile 2. While many gems drop from defeated enemies, reliable vendors offer a consistent way to obtain crucial abilities, especially early in your journey or when experimenting with new builds. Understanding vendor mechanics and alternative acquisition methods will significantly streamline your progression.

Early Game Gem Vendors

Your primary source of gems in the early acts will be specific NPCs found in the main town hubs. These vendors' inventories expand as you complete quests and progress through the story, offering a wider selection of gems relevant to your class and others.

Nessa (Lioneye's Watch - Act 1): Nessa is your very first gem vendor. After completing the quest "Mercy Mission," she will offer a basic selection of Skill Gems tailored to your chosen class (e.g., Marauders will see more Strength-based gems like Heavy Strike, Witches more Intelligence-based like Freezing Pulse). Her inventory expands further after "The Siren's Cadence." check her stock for early Support Gems like Chance to Bleed Support or Added Fire Damage Support once they become available.
Yeena (The Forest Encampment - Act 2): Upon reaching Act 2, Yeena takes over as the primary gem vendor. Her selection includes gems from all three attributes, making her crucial for multi-attribute builds or acquiring off-class gems. Completing quests like "Sharp and Gloomy" or "Intruders in Black" will unlock additional gems in her inventory.
Clarissa (The Sarn Encampment - Act 3): Clarissa offers an even broader range of gems as you delve into Act 3. Her inventory is particularly important for accessing more advanced Support Gems and some foundational Aura skills. Progressing through quests such as "Lost in Love" and "Severed in Sleep" will expand her offerings.

Vendor Currency: Most vendor-bought gems are purchased using Scrolls of Wisdom or Orbs of Transmutation in the early game, transitioning to Orbs of Alteration and later Orbs of Chance as you progress. Keep a healthy supply of these currencies.

Quest Rewards & Optional Gems

Many Skill Gems are offered as quest rewards, allowing you to choose one from a small selection. These are often powerful foundational skills for various archetypes.

Act 1 Quest: "The Dweller of the Deep": After defeating the Dweller, you'll typically be offered a choice of several movement skills or utility gems. For example, a Ranger might choose Dash, while a Witch might opt for Flame Dash.
Act 2 Quest: "The Way Forward": This quest often provides access to early Aura gems or additional primary attack skills. Carefully consider your build's needs when making these choices.
Act 3 Quest: "A Fixture of Fate": This quest is particularly important as it often unlocks access to powerful early-game Support Gems that can significantly boost your damage or utility.

Important Note: Even if you don't pick a specific gem as a quest reward, it will often become available for purchase from the current act's gem vendor shortly thereafter. This means you won't permanently miss out on a gem, but you might have to spend currency to acquire it later.

Alternative Gem Acquisition

Beyond vendors and quest rewards, several other methods contribute to your gem collection:

Monster Drops: All types of gems can drop from defeated monsters throughout Wraeclast. Higher-level zones and tougher enemies have a chance to drop rarer or higher-level gems. Keep an eye out for white, blue, and red gem icons on the ground.
Strongboxes: Certain strongboxes, especially those with "of Gemcutter" or "of the Jeweller" affixes, have an increased chance to drop Skill and Support Gems.
Divination Cards: Some Divination Cards can be exchanged for specific Skill Gems or even a random gem. For example, the "Gemcutter's Promise" card can grant a random quality gem.
The Labyrinth: Completing the Lord's Labyrinth (Normal, Cruel, Merciless, Eternal) offers unique rewards, including powerful Support Gems that are exclusive to the Labyrinth or significantly harder to find elsewhere. The Izaro's Treasure chests at the end are a prime source.
Trade (Player-to-Player): For specific or high-quality gems, trading with other players is often the most efficient method, especially in the endgame. use the in-game trade system or third-party trade websites to find what you need.

Gem Quality: Gems can drop or be acquired with "Quality," which enhances their effects. For example, Fireball with Quality might have increased projectile speed. You can also increase gem quality using Gemcutter's Prisms, which are rare currency items.
