Skill Gem System Overhaul

Welcome, Exiles, to a completely reimagined Skill Gem system in Path of Exile 2! Gone are the days of socketing support gems directly into your active skill gems. This overhaul introduces a more fluid and strategic approach to customizing your combat abilities, allowing for unprecedented build diversity and on-the-fly adaptation.

Understanding the New System

The core change is that Skill Gems now have their own dedicated support gem slots, separate from your equipment. This means your armor, weapons, and accessories are freed up for pure stat and defensive considerations, while your skills become miniature, self-contained powerhouses. Each active skill gem you acquire will now display a certain number of empty support gem slots directly on the gem itself.

Acquiring Skill and Support Gems

Gems are still found as drops from defeated enemies, quest rewards, and can be purchased from vendors. Early game, look for vendors like Nessa in Lioneye's Watch (Act 1) or Yeena in the Forest Encampment (Act 2) for a basic selection. However, the most potent gems will come from challenging encounters and unique bosses.

Skill Gems: These are your primary abilities, such as "Fireball," "Whirlwind," or "Summon Skeletons." They now drop with a pre-determined number of support slots, ranging from 1 to 5.
Support Gems: These modify the behavior of your active skill gems. Examples include "Added Fire Damage Support," "Lesser Multiple Projectiles Support," or "Cast While Channelling Support." Support gems are no longer color-locked to specific skill gem types; any support gem can be linked to any skill gem, provided you have an available slot.

Linking and Unlinking Gems

The process of linking support gems to an active skill gem is straightforward:

Open your Inventory (I): Locate the active skill gem you wish to modify.
Drag and Drop: Simply drag a support gem from your inventory onto the active skill gem. If there's an available slot, the support gem will link.
Unlinking: To remove a support gem, right-click the active skill gem and select "Unlink Support Gem." You can then choose which support gem to remove. Unlinking is free and does not destroy the gem.

Pro-Tip: Pay close attention to the mana cost implications. Each linked support gem will increase the mana cost of the active skill. Efficient mana management is crucial for complex skill setups.

Gem Leveling and Quality

Both Skill and Support Gems still gain experience and level up as you use them, increasing their potency. Gem quality, obtained through Gemcutter's Prisms (found rarely or purchased from vendors in later acts), enhances specific attributes of the gem. For example, a quality "Fireball" might have increased projectile speed, while a quality "Added Fire Damage Support" might grant a higher percentage of added damage.

Strategic Considerations for the Overhaul

Early Game Focus: Prioritize active skill gems with at least 2-3 support slots. This allows for immediate power boosts with basic supports like "Added Cold Damage" or "Faster Casting." You can find these early on from vendors or common drops in areas like the Mud Flats.
Mid-Game Specialization: As you progress into Act 3 and beyond, you'll start finding skill gems with 4 or 5 support slots. This is where you can begin to truly specialize your abilities. Consider synergistic combinations, such as "Spark" with "Fork Support" and "Increased Critical Strikes Support" for a lightning-fast, area-clearing build.
Late Game Optimization: High-tier unique skill gems and rare support gems will be crucial for endgame content. Look for gems with unique modifiers or those that enable entirely new playstyles. For instance, a "Volatile Dead" skill gem with 5 support slots could be linked with "Desecrate Support" (to generate corpses), "Spell Echo Support," "Controlled Destruction Support," and "Increased Area of Effect Support" for devastating explosions.
Flexibility is Key: The ease of unlinking gems encourages experimentation. Don't be afraid to swap out support gems to adapt to different encounters or boss mechanics. Facing a high-fire-resistance boss? Swap "Added Fire Damage Support" for "Added Cold Damage Support" on your primary attack.
