Kitava, the Insatiable (Act 10)

The final confrontation with Kitava, the Insatiable, in Act 10 marks the culmination of your journey through Wraeclast's main storyline. This encounter is a significantly amplified version of the Act 5 fight, demanding meticulous preparation, robust defenses, and a solid understanding of his attack patterns. While the core mechanics remain consistent, Kitava's increased damage, vast health pool, and more aggressive attack cadence elevate this battle to a true test of your character's build and your player skill.

For a comprehensive breakdown of Kitava's fundamental mechanics, including detailed attack descriptions and phase transitions, please refer to our dedicated guide: Boss: Kitava, the Insatiable (Act 5).

Key Mechanics & Critical Reminders (Act 10)

Even if you've mastered the Act 5 fight, it's crucial to reiterate the most vital mechanics, as failure to address them will quickly lead to your demise in Act 10:

  • Heart Exposure: This is the central mechanic of the fight. Kitava is invulnerable until his heart is exposed. During the first phase, he will periodically expose his heart after certain attacks. In the second phase, you must destroy the chains tethering his heart to deal damage. Prioritize damaging the heart whenever it's vulnerable.
  • Vorana's Aid: Just like in Act 5, the Spirit of Vorana will periodically appear to assist you. She creates safe zones from Kitava's devastating area-of-effect attacks and provides a brief window to recover or deal damage. Stay within her protective aura when it appears.
  • Slam Attacks: Kitava's ground slams are telegraphed by a large red circle on the ground. These deal massive physical damage. Always move out of the indicated area immediately.
  • Fire Breath/Spit: Kitava unleashes various fire-based attacks, including a wide cone of fire breath and projectiles that leave burning ground. Fire resistance is paramount.
  • Projectile Barrage: He can launch a volley of projectiles that spread out. These are often accompanied by other attacks, making evasion challenging.
  • Adds (Heart Phase): During the heart exposure phases, Kitava will summon various minions. These should be cleared quickly to prevent being overwhelmed and to maintain focus on the boss.

Preparation for the Final Battle

Before engaging Kitava, ensure your character is adequately prepared. This is not a fight to rush into under-geared or with sub-optimal resistances.

Defensive Considerations:
  • Resistances: Cap your Elemental Resistances (Fire, Cold, Lightning) at 75%. Overcapping Fire Resistance is highly recommended due to Kitava's prevalent fire damage. Chaos Resistance, while less critical, can still help mitigate some incidental damage.
  • Life/Energy Shield: Aim for a robust life pool (e.g., 4000+ Life for most builds) or a substantial Energy Shield pool. Defensive layers like Block, Evasion, Armour, and Dodge are invaluable.
  • Flasks:
    • Life Flasks: Ensure you have at least two instant-recovery or hybrid life flasks. Modifiers like "removes bleeding" and "removes freeze" are crucial for general gameplay but less so for Kitava specifically.
    • Utility Flasks: A Granite Flask (Armour), Basalt Flask (Physical Damage Reduction), Jade Flask (Evasion), or Quartz Flask (Phasing/Dodge) can significantly boost your survivability. Consider a Sulphur Flask for consecrated ground regeneration.
    • Curse Removal: While Kitava doesn't apply curses, having a flask that removes curses (e.g., from a 'of Warding' suffix) is good practice for general Act 10 progression.
  • Pantheon Powers:
    • Major God: Soul of Lunaris: Provides physical damage reduction and movement speed, especially useful for dodging slams.
    • Minor God: Soul of Ralakesh: Grants immunity to Maim and Blind, and reduces physical damage taken from projectiles.
    • Minor God: Soul of Abberath: Reduces burning ground damage, which is very common in this fight.
Offensive Considerations:
  • Damage Output: Ensure your build has sufficient damage to quickly burst down Kitava's heart and clear adds. Prolonging the fight increases the chance of making a mistake.
  • Movement Skill: A reliable movement skill (e.g., Whirling Blades, Flame Dash, Leap Slam, Shield Charge) is essential for dodging attacks and repositioning.

The Fight Strategy (Act 10)

Phase 1: The Heart of the Beast
  1. Initial Engagement: Kitava will be on the platform. Focus on dealing damage while actively dodging his slams, fire breath, and projectile attacks.
  2. Heart Exposure: After certain attack sequences, Kitava will expose his heart. This is your primary damage window. Unload your most powerful skills onto the heart.
  3. Vorana's Intervention: When Kitava prepares a massive area-wide attack, Vorana will appear and create a safe zone. Immediately move into this zone. This is also a good opportunity to recover life/ES and prepare for the next damage phase.
  4. Add Management: Kitava will summon various cultists and other minions. Clear these quickly, especially if they pose a threat to your survivability or block your path to the heart.
  5. Repeat: Continue this cycle of dodging, damaging the heart, utilizing Vorana's safe zones, and clearing adds until Kitava transitions to Phase 2.
Phase 2: The Chains of Corruption

Once Kitava's health is sufficiently lowered, he will retreat to the background, and his massive heart, tethered by chains, will become the primary target.

  1. Destroy the Chains: Kitava's heart will be invulnerable until you destroy the four chains linking it to the platform. Prioritize destroying these chains. They have their own health bars.
  2. Environmental Hazards: During this phase, Kitava will continuously bombard the arena with various attacks:
    • Fireballs: Large fireballs will rain down, leaving burning ground. Move constantly to avoid standing in these.
    • Sweeping Beam: Kitava will unleash a slow-moving, wide beam of fire across the arena. Position yourself to move with or against the beam to avoid its path.
    • Slamming Tentacles: Tentacles will periodically slam down, indicated by red circles. Dodge these as you would Kitava's regular slams.
  3. Damage the Heart: Once all four chains are destroyed, Kitava's heart becomes vulnerable again. Focus all your damage on it. This is often a DPS race against the environmental hazards.
  4. Repeat: After a period of vulnerability, the chains will regenerate, and you'll need to destroy them again. Repeat this cycle until Kitava is defeated.

Common Pitfalls and Tips

  • Standing in Fire: Kitava's fire damage is immense. Do not stand in burning ground or his fire breath. Ever.
  • Ignoring Adds: While the heart is the main target, letting adds pile up can quickly overwhelm you, especially if they stun or slow you.
  • Panic Flasking: Use your flasks strategically. Don't spam them unless absolutely necessary. Save instant recovery flasks for critical moments.
  • Lack of Movement: This fight requires constant movement. Static builds will struggle immensely.
  • Underestimating the Resistance Penalty: After defeating Kitava, you will suffer a permanent -30% Elemental Resistance penalty, bringing your total penalty to -60%. Ensure your gear can compensate for this in the endgame.

Rewards

Upon defeating Kitava, the Insatiable, you will:

  • Complete Act 10 and the main storyline.
  • Gain access to the Atlas of Worlds, the primary endgame content.
  • Receive a permanent -30% Elemental Resistance penalty. This stacks with the -30% penalty from Act 5, resulting in a total of -60% to all elemental resistances.
  • Be able to select a final Ascendancy point if you haven't already.
  • Unlock the ability to use Labyrinth Enchantments on your gear.

Congratulations, Exile! You have conquered the main campaign and are now ready to delve into the vast and challenging endgame of Path of Exile.
