- Navigate through the Ship Graveyard Cave to find Brutus.
- Defeat Brutus, Lord of the Asylum.
- Activate the Brutus's Prison Waypoint.
- Proceed to the Cavern of Wrath.
Walkthrough: From Lioneye's Watch to Brutus
From Lioneye's Watch, head north to exit into the Terrace. Continue through the Terrace until you reach the entrance to the Prisoner's Gate. This area is populated by various undead enemies, including Zombies, Skellies, and the occasional Risen Vaal. Be mindful of their numbers and avoid getting surrounded.
Once in the Prisoner's Gate, your goal is to find the entrance to the Ship Graveyard Cave. This cave entrance is often located towards the northern or eastern edges of the Prisoner's Gate map. The Ship Graveyard Cave itself is a linear, albeit winding, dungeon teeming with more undead and the occasional Rhoa. Keep an eye out for any skill gems or gear drops that might improve your character.
At the end of the Ship Graveyard Cave, you will find the entrance to Brutus's Prison, the arena where you will face the boss.
Boss Strategy: Brutus, Lord of the Asylum
Brutus is a formidable opponent for an early-game character. He deals primarily physical damage and can inflict the stun status effect, which can be deadly if you're caught in a vulnerable position. Understanding his attack patterns and how to counter them is key to victory.
Brutus's Attack Patterns:
- Basic Melee Attack: A standard, slow physical attack. Easy to sidestep.
- Ground Slam: Brutus raises his large hook and slams it into the ground, creating a small area of effect (AoE) around him. This attack deals significant damage and can stun.
- Counter: As soon as you see him wind up, move away from him. This is your primary avoidance mechanic for the fight.
- Hook Slam (Chain Hook): Brutus extends his hook a short distance in a line, pulling you towards him if you're hit. He often follows this up with a Ground Slam.
- Counter: This attack has a clear wind-up animation. Sidestep or move perpendicular to his cast direction to avoid being pulled in. If you are pulled, be prepared to immediately move away to dodge the follow-up Ground Slam.
- Leap Slam (Rare): Occasionally, Brutus will leap towards your location, dealing AoE damage upon landing. This is less common than his other attacks but can catch you off guard.
- Counter: Similar to the Ground Slam, move away from his landing zone as he initiates the leap.
General Strategy & Tips:
- Keep Moving: This is the most critical piece of advice. Brutus's attacks are heavily telegraphed but hit hard. Constant movement will allow you to avoid most of his damage.
- Hit and Run: Attack Brutus a few times, then move to avoid his next attack. Repeat this cycle. Don't stand still and try to tank his hits, especially if you're a ranged character.
- Flask Management: Your life flasks are your best friends. Use them proactively when your health drops, rather than waiting until you're critically low. If you have a Quicksilver Flask, use it to quickly reposition and avoid attacks.
- Minion/Totem Playstyle: If you're playing a character that utilizes minions or totems, deploy them and let them draw Brutus's aggro. This allows you to safely deal damage from a distance.
- Environmental Hazards: Brutus's arena is relatively clear, but be mindful of the walls. Don't corner yourself.
Recommended Early Gear & Flasks:
- Life Flasks: Ensure you have at least 3-4 Small Life Flasks or Medium Life Flasks. Look for mods like "of Staunching" (removes bleeding) or "of Warding" (removes curses) if you've found them, though they aren't strictly necessary for Brutus.
- Mana Flasks: Keep 1-2 Small Mana Flasks or Medium Mana Flasks on hand to sustain your skills.
- Quicksilver Flask: If you've found one, this flask is invaluable for its temporary movement speed boost, helping you dodge Brutus's attacks more effectively.
- Gear with Life and Resistances: Prioritize gear with increased maximum life. While elemental resistances aren't critical for Brutus (who deals physical damage), having some on your gear is always a good idea for future encounters. Any gear with increased armor or evasion rating will also help mitigate his physical damage.
- Linked Sockets: Ensure your main damage skill is linked with at least one support gem (e.g., Added Fire Damage Support, Lesser Multiple Projectiles Support).
Common Pitfalls:
- Standing Still: The quickest way to die to Brutus is to stand in one place, especially after he uses his Hook Slam.
- Running Out of Flasks: Don't be stingy with your flasks. If you're low, consider portaling back to town to refill or farm some nearby enemies for charges.
- Under-leveled/Under-geared: While Brutus is an early boss, attempting him significantly under-leveled (e.g., below level 5-6) or with extremely poor gear can make the fight unnecessarily difficult. Farm a few extra levels in the Prisoner's Gate if you're struggling.
After Defeating Brutus
Once Brutus falls, a Waypoint will appear in his prison. Interact with it to activate it. This will allow you to quickly travel back to Lioneye's Watch or other activated waypoints. You will also receive a quest reward from Bestel upon returning to town.
After activating the Waypoint, proceed through the exit in Brutus's Prison to enter the Cavern of Wrath. This marks the next stage of your journey through Act 1.
Quest Rewards
Upon returning to Bestel in Lioneye's Watch after defeating Brutus, you will be rewarded with a choice of one skill gem:
- Melee Attackers: Ruthless Support
- Ranged Attackers: Faster Attacks Support
- Spellcasters: Added Lightning Damage Support
Choose the support gem that best complements your primary damage skill. These gems are crucial for increasing your character's damage output.
