Skill Cards & Skill Inheritance

Persona 3 FES introduces a powerful new mechanic: Skill Cards and Skill Inheritance. These systems allow for unprecedented customization of your Personas, letting you transfer specific skills between them to create truly optimized allies. Mastering this will significantly enhance your combat capabilities, especially in Tartarus and against the toughest bosses.

Understanding Skill Cards

Skill Cards are consumable items that, when used, teach a specific skill to any Persona you currently possess. This bypasses the traditional inheritance rules of Persona fusion, allowing you to impart skills that might otherwise be difficult or impossible to obtain on certain Personas. They are a game-changer for building specialized Personas.

Obtaining Skill Cards
  • Shuffle Time: This is your primary method for acquiring Skill Cards. After battle, if you achieve a "Shuffle Time" bonus, you'll have a chance to draw a Skill Card. The specific cards available depend on the Persona you defeated and the floor of Tartarus you are on. Prioritize drawing cards with rare or powerful skills whenever they appear.
  • Persona Level Up: Some Personas will generate a Skill Card upon reaching a certain level. This is often indicated by a message in the battle results screen. Keep an eye out for these, as they can provide unique or high-tier skills.
  • Monad Depths: The optional Monad Depths (accessible later in the game) are an excellent source of high-level Skill Cards from powerful Shadows.
  • Antique Shop (Shinshoudo Antiques): While less common for direct Skill Card purchases, the Antique Shop in Paulownia Mall may occasionally offer rare Skill Cards in exchange for gems found in Tartarus. Check back frequently.
Using Skill Cards

To use a Skill Card:

  1. Navigate to the "Persona" menu.
  2. Select the Persona you wish to teach a skill to.
  3. Choose the "Skill Card" option.
  4. Select the Skill Card from your inventory.
  5. Confirm the skill transfer. Note that if the Persona already has eight skills, you will be prompted to choose a skill to overwrite.

Strategy Tip: Don't be afraid to use Skill Cards! While some are rare, the flexibility they offer is invaluable. Consider saving powerful elemental spells (e.g., Agidyne, Bufudyne) or support skills (e.g., Mediarahan, Charge) for Personas that can truly benefit from them, or to cover weaknesses in your team's elemental coverage.

Skill Inheritance through Fusion

Beyond Skill Cards, the traditional method of Skill Inheritance through Persona fusion remains crucial. When fusing two or more Personas, the resulting Persona will inherit a selection of skills from its "parents."

How Inheritance Works
  • Arcana Influence: The Arcana of the resulting Persona plays a significant role in which types of skills it prefers to inherit. For example, a Persona of the Lovers Arcana might be more inclined to inherit healing skills, while a Chariot Persona might favor physical attacks.
  • Random Selection: While there's an Arcana preference, the exact skills inherited are somewhat random. You can repeatedly back out of the fusion screen and re-enter to "reroll" the inherited skills until you get a desirable combination.
  • Skill Compatibility: Some skills are incompatible with certain Personas or Arcana. For instance, a Persona with a natural resistance to Fire might not be able to inherit a Fire skill, or it might be heavily penalized in its chances.
  • "Good" and "Bad" Inheritance: Certain skills are considered "good" for inheritance (higher chance of appearing), while others are "bad" (lower chance). Generally, passive skills and high-tier elemental spells are good, while basic attack skills or specific status ailments might be bad.
Fusion Strategies for Skill Inheritance
  1. Skill Chaining: Plan your fusions multiple steps in advance. You can fuse a Persona with a desired skill, then fuse that Persona with another, and so on, to "chain" a specific skill onto your ultimate target Persona. This is especially useful for passing down rare skills like Victory Cry or Spell Master.
  2. Sacrifice Fusions: Use Personas with skills you want to pass on as "sacrifices" in a fusion. Don't worry about their levels or stats; their sole purpose is to contribute their skill pool.
  3. Utilize Skill Cards for Fusion Fodder: If you have a Skill Card for a desirable skill, you can teach it to a low-level Persona, then use that Persona in a fusion to increase the chances of the skill being inherited by the resulting Persona. This combines the strengths of both systems.
  4. Save Scumming: Before a critical fusion, save your game. If the inherited skills aren't to your liking, reload and try again. This is a common and effective strategy for optimizing Persona builds.

By effectively combining Skill Cards and strategic Persona fusion, you can craft a powerful and versatile Persona team capable of overcoming any challenge in Persona 3 FES.
