The Dark Hour & Tartarus Mechanics
Welcome, SEES member! The Dark Hour is a hidden hour between one day and the next, a time when the world transforms, and the towering labyrinth of Tartarus appears. Navigating this mysterious period and conquering Tartarus is central to your journey. This section will equip you with the knowledge to efficiently explore, battle, and survive.
Understanding the Dark Hour
Every night at midnight, the world shifts. Most people transmogrify into coffins, oblivious to the supernatural events unfolding. You and your fellow Persona-users, however, remain active. This is your window to enter Tartarus.
- Accessing Tartarus: Tartarus is located on the grounds of Gekkoukan High School. During the Dark Hour, the school transforms into the tower. You can choose to enter Tartarus from the school gate.
- Time Management: Entering Tartarus consumes your evening slot. Plan your daytime activities carefully to ensure you have enough energy and time for Tartarus exploration.
- Full Moon Operations: On specific Full Moon nights, you will engage in story-critical boss battles outside of Tartarus. These are mandatory and often involve unique mechanics. Always ensure your party is well-equipped and leveled for these encounters.
Tartarus Exploration: The Labyrinth Awaits
Tartarus is a procedurally generated dungeon, meaning each floor layout changes with every visit. It's divided into several blocks, each with a Guardian boss at its peak. Your objective is to climb as high as possible, defeat the Guardians, and uncover its secrets.
Party Management & Status
- Party Members: You can bring up to three other SEES members with you into Tartarus. Each has unique strengths and weaknesses. Experiment to find a balanced team for different situations.
- HP & SP: These are your most crucial resources. HP is lost in battle, while SP is consumed by Persona skills. Both are persistent across floors.
- Healing: Use items like Medical Powder, Snuff Soul, or Persona healing skills.
- Recovery Points: Certain floors have glowing blue recovery points that fully restore HP and SP for a small fee. These are invaluable for extended runs.
- Fatigue: As your party explores and battles, they will accumulate fatigue.
- Symptoms: Fatigued characters have reduced stats and are more susceptible to status ailments. Severely fatigued characters may refuse to enter Tartarus or perform poorly in battle.
- Recovery: Fatigue naturally recovers by sleeping in your dorm room. Spending multiple nights in Tartarus without rest will lead to your entire party becoming fatigued.
- Avoiding Fatigue: Limit your Tartarus excursions to 1-2 nights per week, focusing on reaching the next accessible barrier.
Navigation & Combat
- Shadow Encounters: Shadows roam the floors. Touching them initiates combat.
- Pre-emptive Strike: Attack a Shadow from behind on the field to gain an advantage in battle. This is crucial for difficult encounters.
- Shadow Advantage: If a Shadow ambushes you, they gain the first turn.
- The Monad Depths: Occasionally, you'll encounter a glowing red portal to the Monad Depths. These optional areas contain powerful Shadows and rare treasures, but are extremely challenging. Proceed with caution.
- Floor Layouts:
- Stairs: Always look for the stairs to the next floor. They are marked on your mini-map once discovered.
- Teleporters: On certain floors, you'll find teleporters that allow you to return to the entrance of Tartarus or to previous block entrances. These are vital for saving progress and resupplying.
- Dark Zones: Some floors will be shrouded in darkness, making navigation difficult. Your mini-map will be obscured.
- The Reaper: Lingering too long on a single floor, or repeatedly avoiding battle, will attract the Reaper. This incredibly powerful Shadow is an instant game over for unprepared parties. Escape immediately if you hear chains rattling.
Treasure & Rewards
- Treasure Chests: Scattered throughout Tartarus, these contain various items:
- Common Chests: Hold consumables like Dis-Poison, Muscle Drink, or low-tier equipment.
- Rare Chests (Gold): Require a Twilight Fragment to open. These contain valuable equipment, powerful consumables, or rare materials.
- Shuffle Time: After winning a battle, you may trigger Shuffle Time. This mini-game allows you to pick cards for various bonuses:
- Persona Cards: Obtain new Personas for the protagonist.
- Arcana Cards: Grant experience, money, or stat boosts.
- Item Cards: Provide consumables or equipment.
- Penalty Cards: Can reduce experience or inflict minor status ailments.
- Gemstones: Certain Shadows drop gemstones like Topaz, Opal, or Garnet. These can be exchanged for valuable items and equipment at the Antique Shop in Paulownia Mall.
Strategic Tartarus Runs
To maximize your efficiency and minimize risk:
- Set Clear Objectives: Before entering, decide whether you're aiming to reach the next barrier, grind for experience, or collect specific items.
- Prioritize Barriers: Your primary goal each month should be to reach and defeat the Guardian boss of the highest accessible block. This unlocks new areas and progresses the story.
- Conserve SP: SP is often more precious than HP. Use physical attacks against weaker Shadows and save your Persona skills for tougher foes or boss battles.
- Exploit Weaknesses: Always aim for "One More!" turns by hitting enemy weaknesses. This allows for All-Out Attacks, which are crucial for clearing groups of Shadows quickly and efficiently.
- Return to Entrance: Don't be afraid to use a Goho-M or a teleporter to return to the entrance if your party is low on resources or heavily fatigued. It's better to retreat and regroup than to risk a game over.
- Check Requests: Elizabeth will frequently offer requests that involve retrieving items from Tartarus or defeating specific Shadows. Complete these for valuable rewards.
