August: Walkthrough
Welcome to August, a month packed with summer activities, crucial dungeon crawling, and relationship building. This comprehensive guide will help you navigate the month efficiently, ensuring you don't miss any important events or opportunities. We'll cover everything from summer festivals and dungeon strategies to Social Link management and stat building, aiming for a perfect 92+ score in your Persona 4 journey!
August 1st - August 10th: Summer Fun & Dungeon Prep
The beginning of August is primarily focused on the summer festival and preparing for the next major dungeon. Make sure your team is well-equipped and leveled for the challenges ahead.
- August 1st (Monday): Free Day. This is an excellent opportunity to focus on Social Links or personal development.
- Social Links: Prioritize Social Links that are close to ranking up or those you want to advance quickly. Consider spending time with your teammates (Chie, Yukiko, Yosuke, Kanji, Teddie) or other available townspeople.
- Stat Building: If your Courage is not yet maxed, consider eating the Aiya's Rainy Day Special Mega Bowl (on rainy days) or working at the hospital (requires Diligence 3 for night shift). Max Courage is essential for certain Social Links later on.
- August 2nd (Tuesday): Summer Festival. This is a significant event that provides a substantial boost to a chosen Social Link.
- Available Characters: You can choose to attend with one of the following characters, provided their Social Link is active:
- Chie Satonaka (Chariot)
- Yukiko Amagi (Priestess)
- Rise Kujikawa (Lovers)
- Yosuke Hanamura (Magician)
- Kanji Tatsumi (Emperor)
- Naoto Shirogane (Fortune): Only if you have initiated her Social Link prior to this date (requires max Knowledge and Courage, and specific dialogue choices during her initial encounters). If you haven't, she won't be an option.
- Dialogue Choices: While specific dialogue choices during the festival itself don't typically impact the Social Link boost, the act of choosing to attend with a character provides a significant, guaranteed boost. Choose the character whose Social Link you wish to advance the most. This event is a great way to push a Social Link to the next rank or get a head start on a new one.
- Available Characters: You can choose to attend with one of the following characters, provided their Social Link is active:
- August 3rd - August 9th: TV World Grinding & Dungeon Exploration. These days are ideal for preparing for the upcoming boss battle.
- Dungeon Focus: The Secret Laboratory is your next target. Your primary goal is to reach the top floor and confront the Shadow.
- Recommended Level: For a comfortable experience and to handle the boss effectively, your party should aim to be around Level 45-50. Grinding here will also yield valuable experience and money.
- Key Items to Farm: Focus on collecting materials dropped by Shadows in the Secret Laboratory. These can be exchanged at Daidara Metalworks for powerful new weapons and armor.
- "Lead Plate" from the "Power Castle" Shadow (found on Floors 1-3) is crucial for crafting better armor.
- "Thick Hide" from the "Lab Rat" Shadow (found on Floors 1-3) can be used for accessories.
- "Sharp Fang" from the "Furious Gigas" Shadow (found on Floors 4-6) for weapon upgrades.
- Persona Fusions: Prepare Personas with specific elemental skills that will be highly effective against Shadows in the dungeon and the upcoming boss.
- Ice (Bufu) skills: Essential for the "Jotun of Power" mini-boss. Personas like King Frost (Empress) or Lamia (Hermit) are excellent choices.
- Wind (Garudyne) skills: Crucial for the "Dominant King" mini-boss. Consider Ganga (Priestess) or Garuda (Star).
- Physical skills: Always useful, especially for the boss's initial phase. Personas with skills like Blade of Fury or God's Hand are strong.
- Healing/Support: Ensure your main character has access to Personas with Media/Mediarama and support skills like Tarukaja/Rakukaja.
- August 10th (Wednesday): Final Preparations. Before committing to the boss fight, ensure your party is fully ready.
- Stock Up: Visit the Shiroku Store. Purchase plenty of healing items like Medical Ointment (restores 100 HP to one ally), Soul Food (restores 50 SP to one ally), and Macca Leaf (restores 50 SP to all allies). Don't forget Goho-M to escape the dungeon instantly.
- SP Management: Ensure all party members have full SP. If not, use items or visit the Fox for SP restoration (though this can be costly).
- Equipment Check: Verify that everyone has the best available weapons, armor, and accessories.
August 11th - August 12th: The Secret Laboratory & Boss Battle
This is the critical period for clearing the Secret Laboratory and confronting the boss. Be prepared for a challenging fight.
The Secret Laboratory Dungeon Walkthrough
The Secret Laboratory is a 9-floor dungeon with a futuristic, sterile aesthetic. Shadows here often resist physical attacks but have elemental weaknesses. Pay attention to enemy types to exploit their vulnerabilities.
- General Dungeon Strategy:
- Exploration: Fully explore each floor to find treasure chests, which often contain valuable items, equipment, or Goho-M.
- Shadow Encounters: Engage every Shadow you see to gain experience and money. Always try to initiate combat with a player advantage by striking the Shadow from behind.
- SP Conservation: Use physical attacks for regular encounters to conserve SP for mini-bosses and the main boss. Only use elemental skills when exploiting weaknesses for All-Out Attacks.
- Party Composition: A balanced party is key. A typical effective setup includes:
- Protagonist: Versatile, covering weaknesses and healing.
- Yukiko: Primary healer and powerful Fire magic user.
- Yosuke: Wind magic, minor healing, and debuffs.
- Kanji: Strong physical attacker and Electric magic.
- August 11th (Thursday): Dungeon Dive.
- Floors 1-3:
- Shadows: Power Castle (Null Phys, Weak Ice), Lab Rat (Weak Fire), Furious Gigas (Resist Phys, Weak Wind).
- Strategy: Prioritize exploiting weaknesses. Power Castle can be annoying with its physical resistance, so hit it with Ice.
- Floor 4: Mini-Boss - Dominant King (2x).
- Weakness: Wind.
- Resistances: Null Fire, Ice, Electric.
- Strategy: These two Shadows primarily use physical attacks. Focus on hitting them with Wind spells (Yosuke's Garu/Garula) to knock them down and initiate All-Out Attacks. Keep your party healed, as their physical attacks can be strong.
- Reward: Access to the next floors.
- Floors 5-6:
- Shadows: Elegant Mother (Weak Fire), Monopolizing Cupid (Weak Ice), Steel Machine (Resist Phys, Weak Electric).
- Strategy: Elegant Mother can inflict status ailments, so be ready with Amrita Soda or Patra. Steel Machine is a good target for Kanji's Zio spells.
- Floor 7: Mini-Boss - Jotun of Power (2x).
- Weakness: Ice.
- Resistances: Null Fire, Electric, Wind.
- Strategy: Similar to the Dominant Kings, these two focus on physical attacks. Use Ice spells (Yukiko's Bufu/Bufula, or Protagonist's Ice Personas) to knock them down and chain All-Out Attacks. They hit hard, so keep Rakukaja up if possible and heal frequently.
- Reward: Access to the upper floors.
- Floors 8-9:
- Shadows: Macho Incinerator (Weak Ice), Platinum Dice (Weak Electric), Prime Magus (Weak Fire).
- Strategy: These floors are straightforward. Continue to exploit weaknesses and conserve SP. The final floor (9) is a short path to the boss room.
- Floors 1-3:
- August 12th (Friday): Boss Battle - Shadow Naoto
- Location: Top Floor of the Secret Laboratory.
- Recommended Party:
- Protagonist: Your main damage dealer and weakness exploiter. Bring Personas with strong physical skills (e.g., Blade of Fury, God's Hand) and elemental skills for later phases. A Persona with Media/Mediarama is crucial.
- Yukiko: Essential for healing (Mediarama) and powerful Fire damage.
- Yosuke: Wind damage, Sukukaja (agility/evasion buff), and minor healing (Mediarama).
- Kanji: High physical damage and Electric magic. Can also take hits.
- Shadow Naoto - Phase 1:
- Weaknesses: None.
- Resistances: Absorbs Fire, Ice, Electric, Wind. Null Light/Dark.
- Attacks: Uses various elemental spells (Agi, Bufu, Zio, Garu) and physical attacks. She can also use Mind Slice (medium physical damage to all) and Brave Blade (heavy physical damage to one).
- Strategy: In this phase, Shadow Naoto is immune to all elemental damage. Your primary strategy should be to deal consistent physical damage.
- Have the Protagonist and Kanji focus on strong physical attacks. Yosuke can use physical attacks or Sukukaja on the party.
- Yukiko should focus on healing with Mediarama/Diarahan.
- Do NOT use elemental attacks; they will heal her.
- Keep your HP high, especially after Mind Slice.
- Shadow Naoto will frequently use Heat Riser (raises all stats for one ally) on herself. Use Dekaja (removes all stat buffs from all foes) from the Protagonist or a Persona to negate this. If you don't have Dekaja, you'll need to rely on Tarunda/Rakunda to counteract her buffs.
- Shadow Naoto - Phase 2 (Enraged Form):
- Once her HP is significantly lowered (around 50-60%), Shadow Naoto will transform and gain a new set of attacks and, crucially, a rotating weakness.
- New Attacks:
- Galgalim Eyes: Inflicts Fear on all party members. This is extremely dangerous as Fear can lead to characters fleeing or doing nothing. Have plenty of Patra/Me Patra Gems or a Persona with Patra/Me Patra ready. Yukiko can learn Divine Grace, which boosts healing, making her a good candidate for Patra.
- Mute Ray: Inflicts Silence on all party members. This prevents spellcasting. Again, have items or skills to cure this (e.g., Dis-Mute items).
- Deathbound: Heavy physical damage to all foes.
- Rotating Weakness Strategy: This is the key to defeating her. Shadow Naoto will hint at her current weakness through her dialogue. Pay close attention!
- "I feel a chill..." or similar dialogue: Weak to Ice. Hit her with Bufu/Bufula (Yukiko, Protagonist).
- "I feel a burning sensation..." or similar dialogue: Weak to Fire. Hit her with Agi/Agilao (Yukiko, Protagonist).
- "I feel a jolt..." or similar dialogue: Weak to Electric. Hit her with Zio/Zionga (Kanji, Protagonist).
- "I feel a gust of wind..." or similar dialogue: Weak to Wind. Hit her with Garu/Garula (Yosuke, Protagonist).
- Execution:
- When she hints at a weakness, immediately exploit it with the appropriate elemental spell. This will knock her down, allowing for an All-Out Attack.
- After an All-Out Attack, her weakness will change. You'll need to wait for her next dialogue cue to identify the new weakness.
- Between weakness phases, continue to use physical attacks and maintain buffs/debuffs (Tarukaja/Rakukaja on your party, Tarunda/Rakunda on her).
- Crucial: Prioritize curing Fear and Silence immediately. A feared character can flee, and a silenced character cannot cast spells, including vital healing or weakness exploitation.
- Keep Yukiko on healing duty, using Mediarama as needed.
- The fight is a race against her powerful attacks and status ailments. Consistent All-Out Attacks are your best bet.
- Reward: After defeating Shadow Naoto, you will obtain the "Detective Badge" and Naoto Shirogane will join your party. This also unlocks her Social Link (Fortune Arcana).
August 13th - August 31st: Social Links & Summer Activities
With the dungeon cleared, the rest of August offers more flexibility for Social Links, part-time jobs, and stat building. Make the most of your summer break!
- Social Link Prioritization:
- Naoto (Fortune Arcana): Now that Naoto has joined your party, you can begin her Social Link. She is available on school days (once school resumes). To initiate her Social Link, you must first speak to a man in the Central Shopping District (North) after August 13th, then speak to Naoto in the school's Practice Building. Her Social Link requires max Knowledge (Rank 5) and max Courage (Rank 5) to initiate. Prioritize spending time with her to unlock powerful abilities and learn more about her character.
- Rise (Lovers Arcana): Continue to advance Rise's Social Link, as her support abilities are invaluable in the TV World, providing crucial information and recovery.
- Other Teammate Social Links: Don't neglect other important Social Links like your teammates (Chie, Yukiko, Yosuke, Kanji, Teddie). Advancing their links unlocks new Personas, battle abilities, and powerful fusion options.
- Other Townspeople Social Links: Consider advancing links like Strength (Daisuke/Kou), Hanged Man (Naoki), or Sun (Ayane/Yumi) if you have time.
- Part-Time Jobs: use your free time to earn money and boost your social stats.
- Hospital Janitor (Night, Shichiri Beach - after unlocking): Requires Diligence 3. Boosts Diligence and earns money.
- Tutoring (Night, Central Shopping District): Requires Knowledge 3. Boosts Knowledge and earns money.
- Origami Crane (Day, Central Shopping District): Boosts Expression and earns money.
- Stat Building: Continue to work on any social stats that are not yet maxed.
- Courage: Continue eating the "Aiya's Rainy Day Special Mega Bowl" on rainy days or working at the hospital.
- Knowledge: Study at your desk in your room, visit the library at school, or work the Tutoring job.
- Expression: Work at the "Origami Crane" job, answer questions correctly in class (once school resumes), or participate in the Drama/Band club.
- Diligence: Work at the Hospital Janitor job or craft models in your room.
- Understanding: Spend time with Nanako or work at the Origami Crane job.
- Fishing: The summer provides ample opportunity for fishing.
- Head to the Samegawa Flood Plain or Shichiri Beach (unlocked after obtaining the scooter and exploring the beach).
- You can exchange fish for prizes at the Shiroku Store, including valuable healing items, accessories, and bait. Catching the Guardian fish is a significant challenge and rewards a powerful weapon.
- Optional Event: Summer Festival (Second Half) - August 20th.
- If you missed the first part or wish to experience another summer event, there's a smaller festival on August 20th. This event typically involves a phone call from a character, offering a chance to spend time with them and receive a Social Link boost.
- Available Characters: Similar to the August 2nd festival, it will likely be one of your active Social Links.
- August 21st (Sunday): Tatsuhime Shrine Event.
- Visit the Tatsuhime Shrine. Participating in the shrine event can provide a random Social Link boost (often to a character you haven't seen in a while) or a minor stat bonus. It's a good low-effort way to gain progress.
- August 23rd (Tuesday): Another Summer Event.
- Check your calendar for potential calls from friends or other opportunities to spend time with Social Links. Summer is a prime time for these informal hangouts.
- August 30th (Tuesday): End of Summer Consolidation.
- The last few days of August are a good time to consolidate your progress. Ensure you've made significant strides in your chosen Social Links and that your stats are improving.
- Consider making a final dungeon run if you need more money, experience, or materials before school resumes.
Remember to save frequently, especially before major events or boss battles. Enjoy the rest of your summer in Inaba, and prepare for the return to school in September!
