January: Walkthrough
Welcome to January, Persona 4 adventurer! This month marks the final stretch of your journey in Inaba, leading up to the true ending. It's a critical time for maximizing your Social Links, preparing for the final dungeon, and uncovering the ultimate truth. Pay close attention to these steps to ensure you don't miss anything important.
General January Strategy
- Social Link Focus: If you're aiming for a perfect run, January is your last chance to max out any remaining Social Links. Prioritize those that are close to ranking up. Remember that most school-based Social Links will be unavailable after January 10th due to exams and school closures.
- Persona Compendium: Use any free time to fuse powerful Personas, especially those with strong elemental coverage or support skills. Aim to complete as much of your Compendium as possible for the ultimate Persona fusion later.
- Equipment & Items: Stock up on healing items (Salvation, Soma, Revival Beads), status ailment cures, and powerful attack items. Visit Daidara Metalworks for the best weapons and armor available. Consider forging powerful equipment from rare materials dropped by Shadows in previous dungeons.
- Money Management: If you're low on Yen, consider revisiting previous dungeons to farm for materials or rare Shadow drops that can be sold at Daidara.
January 1st - January 9th: New Year's & School Life
The first few days of January are relatively relaxed, offering opportunities for Social Links and preparations.
- January 1st (New Year's Day): You'll spend the day with Dojima and Nanako. This day is fixed and no choices are available.
- January 2nd - January 3rd: These days are typically free. Use them to advance Social Links, study, or engage in part-time jobs.
- Social Links: Prioritize any remaining school-based Social Links (e.g., Strength, Hanged Man, Sun, Star, Tower).
- Stats: If your Social Links are maxed, focus on raising your Knowledge, Courage, Expression, Diligence, or Understanding through studying, working, or reading.
- January 4th: School resumes. You'll have class and then free time.
- January 5th - January 9th: These days function like regular school days. Attend classes, answer questions correctly for Knowledge points, and use after-school and evening slots for Social Links, part-time jobs, or stat-building activities.
- Class Answers: Pay attention to the questions asked in class; answering correctly boosts your Knowledge.
- Evening Activities: Don't forget about evening Social Links like the Devil (Sayoko) or Tower (Hisano), or activities like working at the hospital or tutoring.
January 10th - January 14th: Final Exams & School Closure
This period marks the final exams and the subsequent closure of school for a short break. School-based Social Links will be temporarily unavailable.
- January 10th - January 14th: Final Exams
- You will take your final exams during these days. The questions cover various topics from throughout the school year. Answering all questions correctly will significantly boost your Knowledge stat and earn you a bonus item (e.g., a "Perfect Score" reward).
- Exam Prep: Make sure your Knowledge stat is high. Spending evenings studying in the days leading up to exams is highly recommended.
- January 15th onwards: School is closed for a short break. This means no school-based Social Links can be advanced during the day. Focus on non-school Social Links, fishing, gardening, or dungeon preparation.
January 15th - January 31st: The True Culprit & Final Dungeon Preparation
This is where the plot thickens significantly. If you've followed the true ending path, you'll be confronted with critical decisions.
- January 15th: You'll receive your exam results. If you got a perfect score, you'll be rewarded.
- January 16th - January 20th: These days are free.
- Social Links: Focus on any remaining non-school Social Links (e.g., Hermit, Temperance, Devil, Tower, Hanged Man).
- Dungeon Prep: This is an excellent time to visit the TV World to grind for experience, Yen, or rare materials if you haven't already.
- January 21st: The Truth Revealed
- A major story event will unfold. You will be prompted to make a series of crucial dialogue choices that determine whether you proceed to the true ending path.
- Crucial Choices: When speaking with your friends, you must identify the true culprit. The correct sequence of choices is vital. If you fail, you will be locked into a bad ending.
- "Wait a second..."
- "We're missing something."
- "The accomplice."
- "Namu." (This is the name of the true culprit, but the game will present it as a choice after you've narrowed it down).
- "Something's bothering me."
- "I'm not finished yet."
- If successful: The true culprit will be revealed, and the final dungeon will become accessible.
- If unsuccessful: You will proceed to a "bad" ending, and the game will conclude shortly after. It is highly recommended to save before this date.
- January 22nd onwards: The Hollow Forest (Optional Dungeon)
- If you are playing Persona 4 Golden and have maxed out Marie's Social Link (Aeon Arcana) by December 2nd, you will gain access to the Hollow Forest dungeon after the events of January 21st.
- Access: Speak to Margaret in the Velvet Room after January 21st.
- Difficulty: The Hollow Forest is a challenging dungeon with unique mechanics. Your items will be reset upon entry, and you'll rely on "Fox Leaves" found within the dungeon for healing and support.
- Rewards: Completing the Hollow Forest is essential for unlocking the Golden ending and obtaining powerful equipment for Marie.
- Strategy:
- Conserve SP: Use physical attacks where possible.
- Collect Fox Leaves: These are your primary source of healing and SP recovery.
- Beware of Shadows: Shadows here are strong and can inflict various ailments. Ensure your Personas have good resistances.
- Boss Fights: Each floor has a mini-boss. Be prepared for tough encounters.
- January 22nd - January 31st: Final Preparations
- Use these remaining days to complete the Hollow Forest (if applicable), fuse ultimate Personas, grind for levels, and purchase any last-minute items or equipment.
- Social Links: Any remaining Social Links can still be advanced if they are not school-based.
- Fishing: If you haven't caught the Guardian or Sea Guardian, now is your last chance to complete the fishing side quest.
- Gardening: Harvest any remaining vegetables for powerful healing items.
By the end of January, you should have a clear path to the true ending, with your team well-equipped and your Personas ready for the ultimate confrontation. Good luck, and remember to save frequently!
